I have a 1946 M and a 1951 M. the 51 has an extra curve in the gear shift lever. I was wondering when the change was made. The 46 has a round flange on the outside of the axel housing. A friend said it looked like a combine housings but I think the housings may have been the top part of a high crop housing. Any information is appreciated.

Hi. No exact information on gear stick. But I understood that it was originally changed to accomodate the oval shaped electrickery box that was on the steering post. Because with the straight one it was not possible to engage 4th gear. True or not? no idea but it would seem to make sense. MTF

As CNKS said, most likely a cotton harvester. They are VERY common around here in central California. MCH will be the prefix, with X20 after the serial number.

I have a 1946 M with the bent shift lever and the seat with a short shock in front.

My M is a late 48. It has the spring seat with the short shock and a curved shifter. It also has a Behlen Power steering unit on it so it may be possible the seat was changed at one time, but everthing looks like it was original age of the paint wise. It is unrestored work tractor.

The 47 M had first coilspring seat, but had a long shock behind it. I think the short shock infront of spring came in 1949. The first M I ever operated was a 1947,later I use a 46 with straight gear shift an old pipe seat. Boy , a lot harder ride than 47.[The coil spring seat was an option].

Parts book does not give a serial break, but lists a different shift lever for tractors equipped with the spring/shock absorber seat. The flanges on the axle housings likely mean that it was a cotton harvester tractor. Check the serial tag for the X20 suffix. I think some of those were field conversions, though.
