I replaced the temp gauge on my '43 H as no readings at all though it looked ok. The new one from Fleet Farm had a bit longer line from gauge to the motor but it's new. After replacing most outter gaskets (no head gasket for all the others) I ran it for about 15 mins. Water was hot and ran well but the gauge that starts at 130 degrees never moved. Is water not getting to the sensor or do I have to work her a bit to raise the temp. above 130+ degrees? I have no leaks (oil nor water) but it does smoke a bit at low idel. Is there a valve issue and anything in the head that would not allow water to cover the gauge for a reading or something else?

Thanks, Dan

my water starts flowing very fast right away...I'm guessing its the thermostat at said by one person. It never changes it's flow rate....nearly bubbles in there. All water stays were it's supposed to, Man, I just replaced the gasket for that part of the motor...now break appart and replace the thermostat and gasket again...the tin....the hose...dang it!!!! It was all apart and I was stupid enough to think the old gauge was worn out and probably all good...just the thermostat. OK, raved enought...time to test and git-r-dun!!! Thanks to everyone...hope I soon can be a go-to person and not an "asker" . Dan

I'm having a bit of an overheating problem on my '54 H, took the thermostat out completely - been flushed, etc. but someone told me I should put it back in, is operating temp critical?

Have you put a therm in the cooland to see what temp it realy is. Those engines dont get that warm unless they are under a load. Simple test just place the sender in a container of hot water along with a therm then you can check the readings on the guage along with a number on the therm.

I think the thermostat is stuck open. The temperature should go up to around 160° - 170° even with no load on the engine if the thermostat is working properly. Sid.

The old gauge on my M when it did work would only get to about 130. If that new gauge starts at that point, it won"t move much.

Put the sensor in boiling water and see if the gauge registers.

I think it is a bad gauge, If the temp won't change, the gauge is probably bad.

Sounds like a bad gauge. If the engine is warmed up at all, the bulb would get hot from the surrounding metal, although it would take longer, even IF there were no water touching the bulb.

Gee zow, all of a sudden temperature gauges are the hot topic. I have two farmalls, an M and an A and neither one runs very hot unless they are under a good load. I pulled the A (2000 lbs). on a trailer )1200 lbs) 16 miles to town on Labor day in 5th gear temperature about 92 degrees and the temp just got to the edge of run. . We live in the smokies so there are lots of hills to climb. The A (thermosiphon) pulling the same wagon empty barely registers. Farmalls seem to run cool unless you really load them down for a peeriod of time
