i've noticed on some of our other tractors like two of our M's and a 450 that there is no voltage regulator or as my grandpa calls it the little "black box" so when i got my 51' farmall M equiped with the heistler 9 speed put back together and running the amp meter guage form the altinator was maxed out and now the battery went dead, did i wire something wrong or why do some tractors need this and others dont?

Generator equipped engines need a regulator or cut-out. On some of the later machines the regulator may be located near the operator's platform.
If the engine has an alternator, it may have an internal (not visible) regulator or may have an external regulator (older units).
You need to be more specific as to what your engine is equipped with before anyone can give you any specific advice.

Earlier M's had the Regulator or Cutout mounted on top the generator, and the later ones had the Regulator or Cutout mounted on the steering post. You MUST use a Regulator or a Cutout or you might ruin the battery and generator.

On some M's the voltage regulator or cutout is mounted on top of the generator.

The most commonly used 12 volt conversion alternator - the Delco "10SI" - has an internal voltage regulator.

Now if the alternator's wired wrong - or if the regulator fails - it is easily capable of overcharging (and ruining!) the battery.

Post back what alternator is on your M and we'll see if we can sort it out.

(Note - You can identify a Delco 10SI by it's 3 rear terminals: One is a stud labelled BAT. The other two are male spade lugs labelled 1 and 2 arranged in row like this: - - )
