I just purchased this tractor and had some pretty extensive work done to it. (New clutch, engine rebuilt, fuel pump rebuilt, alternator rebuilt, new battery to name a few things!!) It has the Diesel engine in it. On the drive home from the shop I noticed that it took a lot of steering wheel movement to get any change in directional change at all in the tractor. It seems fine at lower speeds and higher gears with lower rpms. I think from my studies on the net that the steering uses the same system as the hydraulics and was wondering if there was some kind of adjustment for it or is it just plain worn out? this tractor has been used hard for many years and is ready for some TLC. Also does anyone have any suggestions on good manuals for these tractors? I have some mechanical ability myself but usually leave the more complicated stuff to my mechanic.
Thannks in advance

Thanks Prairie. I checked and the tie rods have quite a bit of slop in them. One more thing to fix. No, make that to things, I saw a slight leak around a fitting and tied to tighten it up and guess what? the nut split. the back side of the nut was worn fro abrasion also so it was only a matter of time. gotta love it!! I will look and see if this is something I can replace myself or if it goes back to the shop. This tractor had a loader on it but it was rusted, twisted and shaky and I opted to just leave it off. Will prbably replace it in 3 or 4 years

Mike, there is only one hydraulic pump in this tractor and it is run off the PTO shaft. The pump supplies a MCV valve that splits off 3 GPM for the power steering, the power brakes and oil cooler and the other 9 GPM goes to the 3pt hitch and aux remote(s). It is unusual to have lack of power steering at high engine RPM it is usually at low RPM if it is pump problem.
Do the simple things first, check Hytran level, change hydraulic filter and maybe Hytran fluid if it never has been changed. Dose not hurt to over fill the hydraulic/rear end by about 5 gal of Hytran. If all that fails then you will have to flow rate and pressure test the hydraulic system to determine if the problem is the pump or MCV valve or power steering unit.

My first thought based on how the tractor felt on the road is that it is not a fluid flow problem but a problem with the sensitivity. It seemed like it was taking a quarter of a turn of the steering wheel before the tractor reacted to the steering input. I thought maybe it might could be bled in case there was air in the system. I do know that I will eventually have to replace the hydraulic pump. About 13 years ago something came loose in the system and scored the wall of the pump causing a slight fluctuation of pressure. It has been run with a front end loader in this condition for years. When you have a heavy implement on the back and raise it up it will kind of bump up and down slightly. The mechanic changed all of the external filters on the machine when he redid it. Overfill by 5 gallons? How much fluid does this thing hold??? How do you check the fluid level? I know that it is filled at the plug near the third link. I assumed that you filled it to the bottom of the threads.
Thanks again.

Mike, First off your steering problem is most likely not hydraulical. Have someone move the steering wheel back and forth while you watch the action of the tie rods and steering cylinder under the front of the tractor. You will find that there will be some loose tie rod ends and the bushings in the cylinder support will be worn.
The hydraulic dip stick is located next to your left foot when setting in the tractor seat. It does not hurt the tractor to overfill this system, infact it is recomended to do so when you have extra equipment like a loader.
You should be able to get a service manual from this website and an operators manual is always a plus to have. These are great little tractors and can do a lot of work. Hope you enjoy yours. PGN.
