Starter Problem-SAV

The six volt starter on my SAV will not turn over when mounted on the engine. I even tried a 12 volt battery but no luck. When I pull the starter and apply voltage it spins freely. I should add that I can hand start the tractor so the engine is free.
Does anyone have any ideas? Is it a bad starter? Is there any other checks I should make before replacing the starter?
Thanks for any help.
Bud

Most likely a bad starter. A current draw gauge will make simple the analysis. (cheap too) the gauge is pushed against the cable and read while starting the tractor (or trying to) If more than 400 on your ASV, it is needing to be rebuilt or replaced. This assumes a good battery amd good heavy cables 00 gauge is prefered, 0 would be OK. JimN

When mounted is it grounded good. I had the same trouble after painting. Scraped the paint off and it worked.

Thanks but I thought of that. I ran a set of jumper cables from another tractor to this starter. It spins freely until I mount it on the tractor and then nothing. I'm thinking that it hasn't enough torque when under load which I assume means a bad starter?
