I am about to rebuild a carb for my Regular and get it running. What problems should I expect to encounter, and how easy is this carb to dial in? I have never played with this type of carb before. Any advice or suggestions?

The stem that goes through the center can be a problem, some are rusted to nothing at the bottom and some break off when you try to remove the nut on the bottom end. Otherwise, they are more or less a mixer, make sure all the holes are open. The float and needle/ seat are available if needed. Adjust the main screw on the top at one and a quarter turns out and the idle screw underneath at a quarter turn out, that should start it with one choke. After that, throttle open and turn the top till it sounds right, idle adjust the bottom. Seems like most times the idle adjustment doesn't change much of anything. I had a four cornered needle the other day that stuck in the seat bore once in a while. Sometimes for float adjustment i will plug the hole in the bottom of the bowl with a washer/bolt/ rubber seal affair and hook the gas line right up to the inlet with the top off. You can adjust the fuel level really well this way, and check the needle/seat and float right then before assembly.

Great info. Thanks. I got lucky because my carb (the second one I got) has a good center stem and all looks OK. I was just wondering how well the carb works. I am guessing not too well since IH stopped using it. I have a Super C that has constant carbutetor problems. I am hoping to have better luck on this one.

They actually are pretty simple and trouble free. The main reason they quit using them was fuel consumption. On a 22-36 you can really tell the difference between the ensign and the zenith. Having a good stem is a fortunate thing, they are available or a machinist can make one, but they sure turn up broken at my place a lot.
