High Speed Gearset in a 460 Utility?

I've got a 460 Diesel Utility that flies on the road; I'd estimate just over 30 MPH. Granted, it is on slightly oversized tires (18.4x28 vs 14.9x28), but that's nowhere near enough to account for the speed. I've had several 460 Utilities, and none would run much more than half the speed of this one. Around here it's known as The Roadrunner. Was there a factory high speed ring & pinion set for 460 tractors, or was this a custom job?

I would be very sure of my tires, wheels, bearings etc, before I got it up to 30 + . And a whole lot of room to stop. I have a 300U, I put new brakes on, but fast stops in road gear arn't very fast.....

Dsl: I suspect those 18.4x28 tires are the reason for the increase in speed, they'll make a big difference over the 14.9x28. You've actually gone up 3 sizes. Over the years I've increased Farmalls 560 and 656 from 15.5x38 to 16.9x38, Farmalls 130 and 140 from 11.2x24 to 12.4x24 and I had a 1066 ordered in with 20,8x38 rather tha the standard 18.4x38. Each and everyone of those changes made a substancial difference in road speed, and in all cases it was only a one size step up.

I don't think there were any optional gear sets that would change all gears. Over the years IH had options for various tractors that would change some of the first 4 gears, but never 5th. Since 5th is straight through 1 to 1 in transmission, it would have to be crown and pinion or bull gear and brake pinion gear and shaft change. Don't think there anything along those lines that would increase speed.

There are gear sets that would decrease the speed of the utility. A Farmall 460 ring gear and transmission main shaft would do it. The main shaft and pinion are one piece.

Farmall - 15 teeth pinion/49 teeth ring (bevel drive) ---- ratio = 3.26

International - 18 teeth pinion/50 teeth ring (bevel drive) ---- ratio = 2.77

Wardner: I knew a Farmall ring and pinion or bull gears would not increase speed. I worded as I did, not knowing if those items might give extra speed if they came from a 300 or 350 Utility.

My reason on questioning this is I had Farmalls 300 governed at 1750 rpm and 560 governed at 2000 rpm, yet with 13.6x38 on 300 and 15.5x38 on 560 they maintained close to same speed on road in 5th travelling between farms. The 300 must have had faster ratio somewhere. I realize I'm talking larger chassis in 560, and that may make a difference. The other item that throws a kink in my thinking is Utilities always used 2000 rpm as governed speed.

Personally I think he's getting all his extra speed from those large tires, three sizes over factory standard tire. I only ever increased tires by one size and that makes a noticable speed increase in any tractor.
