I got the new VR and put it on my SC. Polarized Gen., started tractor and guage still shows discharge to the left, almost 15 amps. Turn lights on it drops to about 10 amp discharge. Changed wires around on AmpMeter and it shows about a 10 amp charge, turn lights on and goes to about a 15 amp charge. Old VR I could get a charge on it by grounding the field terminal. Can't try that right now though with new VR, broke a bolt on the AmpMeter so going to have to get a new AmpM now. Was taking wires off, checking that they were good and cleaning ends up, one nut was stuck so I got it unstuck lol. So whenever the ampmeter comes in this week how would you suggest I wire it? I did check and the wire from Batt. on VR is going to the discharge side bolt on the back of the AmpM and the wire that goes to the starter is on the charge side bolt. Seems to be a lot of Gen, VR questions lately, wonder if that means winter is coming? lol.

Terry, When you go to wire that new VR like Bob was talkin, remember theres usually ONLY ONE wire on its Supply terminal, thats the one to the battery/starter (often on starter switch/solenoid big input cable from battery) where it gets its input supply voltage. On the other Load terminal, its the one that wires down to BAT on the VR PLUS it may feed hot battery voltage to loads like lights n ignition switches UNLESS your VR has the extra 4th LOAD terminal and if so, it and NOT the ammeters Load terminal serves that purpose. Id again polarize the genny before you fire her up just in case and be sure the VR has a good ground.

In a word: YES!

----

Sounds like the old ammeter was wired up backward. Recommend doing this:

1 - Install/connect the new ammeter.
2 - With the engine off turn on the lights. If the ammeter indicates discharge do nothing. However if it indicates charge, reverse the connections at the ammeter.

3 - Run the engine. The ammeter now should show charge.

----

Also if you have a voltmeter, stick it across the battery with engine running and the ammeter indicating charge. If the voltmeter shows 6.5 volts or higher the battery is being charged. (Less than 6 volts means it's discharging....)
