Hey all,

This is going to be my first trip to a tractor salvage yard. The proprieter says that he has a couple things I need. SO, I am going to pack a tool box, lunch, a digital camera and what ever else I think I may need ( I hope I leave room to bring something home.) Do any of you scrapyard veterans have any suggestions? I am truly a greenhand when it comes to this!

Butch

Al,

I,m going to Jaeckel brothers in Fort Atkinson. I went searching for lakeside on the bike on Saturday. I don't have a current phone number nor do I know where it is. Could you offer any assistance?

Thanks for the luck!

Butch

Butch, you are probably out on the road already, unless you got the big storm also. Lakeside = N6891 County Road B, Harrisville, east of Westfield on Cty. Trunk J, south on B. Open EVERY day till 5. The older guy made me laugh as he logged in your name and was listening to Wisconsin Public Radio. 608-296-2070 and this contact is ~ four yrs. old. Those guys hit it on the head with suggesting hornet spray, I'd suggest something for misquitoes/gnats now w/all the rain. Please make note if you see a bracket that bolts (four) between the rockshaft arms for connecting top link for a Farmall 340. This piece doesn't fit behind the horizontal shaft of arms. Luck!

Rather than penetrating oil, just take a propane or mapp gas torch. Much quicker results.

Butch, if you run into one of those hydralic valve covers while you are there grab one for me. LOL And don;t forget I need one of those cast steering arms that come down from the steering control and hook to the drag link. Mine has two pieces of angle iron welded to it. LOL I'll gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

Take a couple cans of carb cleaner with you. Does 2 things kills them bugs that sit down hard on your arm and cleans the grease off of things well. Also a couple cans of PB blaster. Be sure to have a hammer or 2 for them things that need that extra thump to break loose, poor mans impact tool. Also take a good number of rags to clean you hands and wipe off the grease/oil and some hand cleaner. Also a pipe wrench just in case you forgot the one size wrench you didn't bring

Summertime here in the midwest. Dont go without some hornet spray. Try to check any obvious place for wasp nests, yellow jackets, all the same to me. Hopefully no bumblebees!!!

Good luck, and good hunting.

I used to hit the yards 3-4 times a week when I was scrounging Oldsmobile parts hot and heavy. I learned real quick what tools to carry out to the yard with me instead of dragging the heavy tool box out there. I usually took one rachet and a small set of sockets of the sizes used on the car, a phillips and a straight blade screwdriver and a pair of channel locks or vise grips. Just tools that I could fit in my pockets as I carried the parts back to the office. A 5 gal plastic bucket can sure come in handy too! If I ran across something I needed another tool for I would just take off the things I could and then carry them back and while there get the other tools out of the truck. It always seemed the good parts were always way out in the back 40. I will add, the MOST important thing I would take out to the yard was a wad of TP, it never failed, I would get to the back 40 and "nature would call". Have fun!

Al L. in Wisc. This won't post on the old board for some reason so I will try it here. Adjustable metric wrench=crescent wrench; PB Blaster/WD-40; persuader=a hunk of pipe large enough to put over the end of any wrench I take along, although lots of times I forget it; a socket set breaker bar if it isn't in with the socket set I grab; gloves; a cooler w/ice and Coca~Cola=I don't like paying $1.39 w/o tax for a cool drink; coffee mug. I also keep an eye out for mom and pop bakeries along with small town cafes. Don't know where you are at or headed for sure, but you may want to check: Lakeside Farms, Marquette County, Harrisville, Wisc. was there ~ four yrs. ago; Al's Tractor, East of Augusta, Wisc. also Downing Tractor, East of Downing, Wisc. or Wisc. Tractor Parts, rural Black Creek. Good luck and keep us posted.

Maybe you guys up north don't have to worry about it but one of the ESSENTIALS here is a tall can of wasp and hornet spray.

I can't tell you the countless times I've been run out from under an old Mustang or Model-T hulk. Not fun to say the least.
