As I came in from bush hogging with the super C Friday. I stopped by the house for lunch, (on the driveway) When I went back out I noticed the right rear outer axle seal leaking. Is this as strait forward as the picture shows? Jack up the one side remove the tire, the carrier cap then replace the two seals and the gasket then put it back together? or am I missing something? Thank you everybody for all the great information here
Larry

thanks I was afraid I was missing something, That is part of why this site is so helpful. How hard is it to get the axle back in once it is removed? does the carrier have to come of too? and I guess that if it does you might as well replace both bearing while you are in there? Sounds like a job for Christmas when my son is home and there are two of us. Thanks again
Larry

YOu can't get to that inside seal without removing the axle carrier from the transmission housing. I've not done this, but I believe the bull gear retainers have to be taken off first and then the axle and axle carrier will comee off as a unit. Take care to not let the bull gear drop down hard when the axle comes out of it. Block it up some how to keep it from falling on the bottom of the transmission case. I'm with George regards the transmission top. I've had the PTO unit off my C and I don't see how you could ever get the bull gear on and off the axle through that hole. Maybe it can be done, but I think it would be much easier to just pull the top off the transmission.

Larry, some folks say you can remove the PTO and get to from the hole at rear of tractor. I have not tried this as it just seems as easy to me to remove the deck and get to it from the top. I suspect it isn't easy to get the bull gear back on through that hole. As for the bearings if they look to be good they probably are and I wouldn't hesitate to use the same bearings, but that is totally up to your judgement. The axle will not come off without removing the bull gear from the inside. Makes a great Christmas project.

Larry, there is a seal on the other end of the axle that keeps the oil in the rear end housing. It is leaking past it and out the other end. You can just put the outer seal in and may stop it, but it isn't the trouble. The inner needs replacing. The outer is only to keep grease in that end of it.

Replacing the outer seal is as you describe. However, likely it will not cure the problem. The outer axle bearing is only supposed to be lubed by the grease fitting provided. There is another inside seal on the inside end of the axle that is supposed to keep transmission oil out of the axle carrier. So...likely that seal is leaking oil as well which is getting into the axle carrier and then to the outer seal and leaking out. Replacing the inner seal is a bigger job, as you have to pull the axle out of the bull gear and remove the axle carrier to get to it. I replaced the outer seal on my C axle several years ago. It was better for a while, but now it is leaking again.
