No - no adjustment. It is usually a combination of upper bolster bushing/bearing wear, lower bolster bushing wear, wear in the u-joints and wear in the worm and sector gear (steering box), and if you have the wide front, wear in the tie rods and drag link ends, etc. Get someone to work the wheel back and forth whilst you watch to see where the play is. Go from there.... mike durhan

I am new here and really don't know much about tractors but I inherited an M last week and it had really loose steering (narrow front) So I took that cover off the top of the steering gear assembly and noticed that there was a lot of slop in the gear so I thought that I could pull the round gear and just grind it off on the bottom so that it would fit further down on the shaft BUT it wasn't built that way SO I took the front wheels off and took that large vertical shaft out the bottom. I then made 3 shims out of some stainless I had laying around and put them on top of the bearing (the bearing was in good shape)and put it back together and greased it. It works great now, no play at all. The whole process took less than an hour.

Does anyone else think this is a good idea? Like I said I know little about tractors and would appreciate input on this technique.

That's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about needing to do. There is no "adjustment" per se. mike

That upper bolster bearing may look alright but if you shimmed it and it works good thats what it takes. However it took almost the better part of a day to take off the sector gear and replace the bearing. Also rotated the gear 180 degrees.
