I bought two last fall for 600 a piece. One a 44 model has nearly new non matching rear tires and a full set of two row cultivators. It runs good and has good straight metal on it, but needs a bearing in the tranny. Everything works. The other a 47 has 80% rear matching tires and a full set of two row cultivators, good straight metal, runs good and ready to work. Both had one set of rear weights on them. I have seen them anywhere from 200 to 2000 depending on condition here in Ky. I think you would probably be OK with it.

Any idea on the compression of the motor? Might be worn valve guides which is allowing the motor to burn alittle oil too. My dad's M does this. As for 5th gear, what are your plans for it??? If you have roadgear intentions then you gotta fix that obviously. On the topic of high speed travel is the frontend good and tight or is it loose? A loose frontend might make highspeed transit unsafe too. Does it have working hydraulics??? Depending on your area 900 might be right on or 900 might be way high. If it doesn't have working hydraulics or doesn't have a pump at all and you plan to brushhog or something like that with it I'd think about making a counteroffer because it would stuff just for you to get it going. If the oil pressure is good WHEN THE ENGINE IS GOOD AND WARM and it just burns alittle oil you are going to probiably be ok. It might run for another 20 years without you having to do anything except check and add alittle oil here and there. Alittle more info is probiably needed.

Needing an overhaul, and a fourth fifth slider, and the matching spline on the input cluster, makes it a modest good purchase. Figure 1000 for the engine materials and machine work (your labor), and a few hundred (or less if good used)for the trans repair. JimN

I just bought a '49 H off Ebay (as a buy it now) for $950.00

Of course the tractor was totally mis-represented, like it had been "started" over the winter and I asked all the usual questions, starting with "in your opinion" about tires and clutch etc. Prior to making the deal I was told all the tires were good, tractor ran good etc.

Just prior to picking it up the guy calls me (mind you I had spoken with him previously to make pick-up arrangements) that I did know the tractor hadn't ran for 2 years and to plan accordingly. I immediately refered to the ad and the responses I received via emails. His "starting" was really "cranking it over". Seems his daughter listed it and was handling all the replies and in the process embelishing on a few things that he had written down for her to list it by.

He felt bad about it, but after I actually looked the tractor over, all the stuff thats usually missing was still on it like it has the fenders, PTO shield, belt pulley, battery box, and lights (with original glass). Wiring is still the cloth covered stuff. 1 flat front tire, 1 rear with dry rot, but all the rims have no rust from calcium. I considered walking, wasn't sure how I could get my funds back (paid via paypal) so I gambled on it.

I had it running within a couple hours of getting it home. It came with a 5ft pull around bush hog with a like brand new PTO shaft. (the deck has some rust... but it works good)

Your deal doesn't sound all that bad, its just like gambling... you could probably do better but if this deal feels right to you it's your money.
