Hello I have a 1952 H It is hard to start, and when it does run it has a very weak powerband.
It wont even go up small hills without dying.I have rebuilt the carb and adjusted it. also have set timing.still to no avail.also it is not charging you can move to switch to low charge or high charge needle stays right at zero.any help would be greatly appreciated.

has the tractor done this for a while, or did it just start doing this? i would spend a little time looking things over before throwing parts at it. first, check your fuel system to be sure you have plenty of fuel to the carb, then give the ignition system a good look, hot spark, good plugs, wires in good shape, timing and point gap correct. then run a compression test. pull all the spark plugs, ignition off, throttle wide open, test each cylinder and write down the readings. you should have between 90-120 psi for each cylinder, they should be within 10% of each other. next, put a couple squirts of oil in each cylinder, crank motor a few times to spread oil around and retest. write the numbers down. if the compression comes up quite a bit, the rings are worn. if the compression was low before, and still doesnt come up, look to valves, either adjustment or valve job.could also be a bad head gasket or crack somewhere. does the engine use a lot of oil? does it lose and coolant? check the air cleaner to see if it is plugged up too.

Outside chance that the coil primary wires might be reversed? + to distributor on a positive ground system.

I think Randy might be on to something. Since you have had the carb off, did you get it and the governor shaft together properly. If not this is your trouble. The shaft sits in a notch if not fitting right your governor is not working.

Replace the plugs & wires. Clean the points and put in a new condenser. See if it will run. Also make sure the air cleaner is not plugged.

Usually it is something simple. You say you have adjusted the carb. It MUST be clean, that means soaking it overnight in carb cleaner, not parts cleaner, putting a kit in it and adjusting it to the specs given in the operator's/service manual. Make sure you have full gas flow to the carb and that the inlet screen inside the fitting that the fuel line screws into is clean. That is a stream of gas, not just a dribble. If you have not put in new points, plugs, and condensor, do so. But, the points and plugs can be cleaned and gapped if they are not too worn. If that does no good, and you are positive everything is to spec, then you start looking at compression, valves, etc. As I say do the simple things first. As to the charging, that could be many things. Begin by polarizing the generator. If your tractor has been converted to 12 volt, or if it now has a voltage regulator instead of a cut out relay, the LH switch will have no effect. A 52 H probably came from the factory with a distributer, voltage regulator and a 3 position light switch instead of the 4 position you mention. Magneto's were still an option at that time, though.

You might want to fix the charging system before you go any further.

I have a 1952 H I use every day (almost) on a loader and it got so when first started it would run on only two cylinders for a couple of minutes and then gradually pick up. I went through the entire ignition system and found nothing wrong. I then found the fan/water pump belt was loose and slipping. Since the generator belt drives off the water pump, the generator also was slipping.

Now the fun part. To adjust the fan belt tension on an H, you have to narrow or widen the water pump pulley, an adjustment that's almost impossible on a pulley that's been around for years untouched without pulling the entire pump. I tried a new belt, thinking it might be a bit tighter. It wasn't. I then took the easy way out and fabricated a bracket that runs an idler pulley inside the fan belt to put more tension on the belt.

Once the generator was turning properly, the engine miss problem was solved instantly. You'd think a battery that has enough life to start the engine would also run the ignition properly once the starter was released, but I guess not.

Hope this helps.

Hi I'm not an expert or a tractor mechanic so take this with a grain of salt . Have you checked the governer ? If it's not working it won't have very good power . Some of these other guy's will have the correct questions or answers for you but this might be a place to start looking . Good luck ...Randy

Did you check the gap between the rocker arm and valves? Made a big difference in mine. I think it's supposed to be .017
