on my 51 m the serial numbers do not match. interestly enough the serial number on the engine soes not match the number on the chasis.....Are the newer M's like the super h's where i.h. dint match serial numbers. Was ther a ryme or reason to the numbers they did use? as i posted my chasis serial number and someone on here guessed the engine serial number within a few numbers. Was there a set way they did it or did they just grab the next one off the rack?

No, they wont.Imagine this. I line with tractors and a line with engines.1st 200 tractors and engine are the same type, then low and behold an orchard or an industrial or a Standard comes through the line. The guy doing the stamping on the engine has no idea that it has changed, and the guy who is stamping the chassis plates does, the chahsisis plates starts with where he left off from the last time he stamped a standard, orchard or industrial, but the guy stamping the engine keeps right on going with the next number.Understand?

The number should match, or its not the original engine. The serial number on the tag on my H is FBH-133801 and the number on the engine is FBH-88099 and the casting codes on the engine and clutch do not match. If the engine & tag numbers match like they do on lots of our other tractors, it is the correct engine.

Andy, are you sure? I don't think the numbers would/should match on an M that new. I know they don't on my Super A's and my Super H. mike

My 1950 has 10,000 difference in engine number. I know it has the original engine.

George, is your M below serial # 240000? most seem to jump to 11000 differance around 240000 or above. Looked at some notes I keep after answering jonnny and think his 51 would be 12000 differance. M parts book says no attempt was made to match chassis and engine serial numbers. On at least the last 5 to 6 years of M production it seems some kind of system was used because most of those M have a engine serial # exactly so many thousand below tractor serial #, more than can be a coinidence. The newer a M tractor the more differance between numbers. Example of actual tractor 286713 X1 engine 273713 X1 13000 differance. Most if not all original H tractors match.

D Slater. My 50 model is 223*** . The engine number is exactly 9997 lower than the tractor. My uncle bought this tractor new and it does have the original engine in it. My other M is at the other place and I can't find my notebook with the numbers right now.

I don't know. I never really paid any attention to them until folks here started talking about it. My 50 has never been out of the family.so I am sure it has the engine it came with. My uncle bought it new, then sold it to my dad, and he gave it to me about 3 years ago. It was overhauled in the late 60's and over bore IH Fire crater pistons installed then. In 1990 dad put new rings, bearings and rebuilt the head. She is still going strong.

I believe you that its the correct engine, wasn't disputing that. 50 M I have is 232719 X1 engine # 222719 X1. others I owned at one time 243658 X1 engine 232658 X1 , 238818 X1, engine 228818 X1. 51 model 274061 X1B engine 262061 X1B, 276739 X1 engine 264739 X1. 49 model 200252 X1 engine 192252 X1. The example I gave in post above was a 52 model, but some listings call that a 51 model. Not saying you missread your # but about ever 50 model M I have checked and I find the last 3 numbers don't match, I think thats not working like the rest, so I check agiain and find out I missread one of the numbers in all but a few tractors. Not claiming any of this is foolproof, just interesting stuff to notice.

D Slater, I went and scraped the paint off and guess what. It is 10,000 instead of 9997 off. The last 3 wasn't stamped real good and looked like a 6 until I scarped the paint off.

This is not 100% correct all the time but if you have a mid year 51 gas M the serial # is probably exactly 12000 less on engine than chassis serial #. If early 51 11000 less, late 13000 less. Maybe 10000 less if real early 51. How did it work out?

The only letter series tractors where the serials absolutely match are the A and B, and then only through 201000. I have read that the H numbers match, I have not checked mine. The M numbers do not match. Close, I do not know.
