Lets see what you have to offer. I had trouble with the gov and so I replaced it with one that is almost new.(51 M) Up to the time I had the problem the tractor ran perfect. Then it started to overspeed going down hill. I live in NC in the mountains so going down hill is a must. Also would not slow down when throttle was retarded. Now new gov and it runs like a champ except it backfires going down hill or whn throttle is retarded abruptly. Other wise runs great. How to get rid of the backfires?????

Henry as others have said that is normal for the M. Both of mine run like new ones and sound like cannons sometime going over a hill. Especially when backing off the throttle.

Henry,

These tractors are not precision engineered things...you can set the timing right on the mark and still have the problem. There is some slack in the distributor/magneto drive system. Under a load, you can be right on the money, but when you back off and cause the load on the gears to rock a little the other way...you will be a little off. I would check the timing at a little positve acceleration of the engine and make sure it is on the mark and then keep trucking! (I am certain you know there is a pin sticking out up front and there is a mark on the pulley)

In addition to setting the timing to the mark, I would make sure the load screw (front bottom of carb) is sdjusted so it is just as lean as it will run well under load. Usually about 2.5 turns out or so, will do it, but it is making good power that counts. If it is too rich and makes the inside of the muffler tip black, it is going to backfire more. They all backfire unless out of gasoline, so it is not abnormal. JimN

Sounds pretty much normal to me. Most of the Ms I've ever been around did the same thing.

Henry

Your timing is off just a tad. Easy fix. You and Marble will fix that in a moment.

PS. glad the govenor got fixed. I knew the other one was shot and was hanging.
