Good news and of course bad news! Got the H all back together but when I fired it up, there is loud gear noise. It stops when the clutch is pushed in. I had put in a new front input shaft gear, but still had the old one in the lower shaft. It shifts fine, goes down the road like the wind, PTO works fine, belt pully works fine, but I am at a loss on the cause of this. It has all new bearings in the tranny and rear end. Someone told me when they rebuilt theirs, it was noisy for a few days till the gears found there new seat since they had been run with bad bearings like mine had. Has anyone rebuilt one and had it be noisy for a while until it seats in or should I go back and tear it down again?

When I did much the same to mine I didn't have to replace the input shaft and its gear or the constant mesh gear on the lower shaft, just the fourth/fifth slider. But I did replace the bearings at the front of both shafts. That change in alignment is enough to make the constant mesh gear whine pretty loudly in every gear except fifth. Fifth is silent. I've decided to live with it. All the rest of the gears look like they should have been changed, and when I have to, I will.
On the other hand, you said that when you mash the clutch the noise stops. Does it whine sitting still, not just when moving? That may mean that it's bad enough to warrant another look. Somebody who knows more than I should be along to say.
Good luck, Wm

Yes, It whines when it is in neutral and the clutch is out. it stops when clutch goes down. It does it in every gear and gets louder when going up a grade. It also whines when going fast and pushing the clutch in. It almost sounds like a super bad power steering pump with little fluid in it. I do think it is that lower gear. Another thing the coupler ring had some wear on the holes and the bolts are worn also, so the clutch shaft is a bit wobbly. I am ordering new stuff for that tomorrow morn. I guess I will check on that lower gear while I am at it.

The noise is probably caused by the mismatched wear patterns between the one gear you replaced, and the one you didn't.

Gears really need to be replaced in pairs.
