The right Rim on my farmall H is making a metal on metal noise. it only makes the noise at a certian part of the rotation. If i rock the tractor wheel from the side it will also make the noise. I looked at the bolts pinching the rim and it looks as if they slipped a 1/4 inch. I wanna make sure i fix it before i reck any threds on the bolts. I just cant belive they came loose. i have NEVER had one come lose before. Do you think the impact wrench would be the best way to retighten them or a ratchet socket with a bar on the end of the ratchet?

Make sure that the bead on the inside of the rim is not damaged and that the clamps are not worn. Also got to make sure you tighten them evenly. If not, the rim may get crooked on the wheel. To check, jack it up so the tire is off the ground. Place a stationary object about a 1/4" of an inch away from the side of the tire. Rotate the tire, and watch to see how it moves in relation to your stationary object. Tighten and loosen and retighten the clamps until your rim is as true to the wheel as possible. It can be a fustraiting process, but worth it.

This is the hard way but I bet it works. Take them off one at a time, clean the threads (wire wheel on bench grinder) or replace the bad bolts and nuts and tighten. Then tighten some more after you run it a while. Do you still have the bars on the rim that keep the rim from slipping?

My experience is to throw away the old wheel bolts and replace them with new. I had a tractor that always would work its wheel bolts loose and no amount of tightening or lock tite would keep them tight..new ones stayed tight!

For my tractor "restorations" that's usually what I do.

I've told this story before, but it bears repeating.

Had a neighbor back in 1957 who was going out to the field to get a load of hay one January morning.

Lugs on the rear tire had worked loose, wheel came off, pitching him forward and under that cast rim. Tractor walked right up the middle of him and cutting him into two pieces.

Allen, I had one fell off a 2940 JD(forgive me)I use to have. I had just had new tires put on the back and went to mow pastures with it. The second day of mowing, I heard it pop one time as I was backing out of the shed where I had just fueled up and assumed it was the tongue of the 20 foot Bushhog I was using. It never made another peep. Four hours later I was mowing a steep hollow (in some places, holler here). At the head of the holler was a flat area where I was turning and all at once as I turned the whole damn wheel fell off. Didn't hurt anyone, but it tore the fender all to pieces on my off brand tractor.

An impact would be the quickest. Hal
PS: You may want to check them once in awhile to see if they need tightening.
