Anyone figured the gals per hr for a SH doing moderate work? Mowed about 10 acres of low ground today, 9 foot 1100 IH mower, in thick brome and canary grass. Pretty good amount of creeping jennt there too. I was in 1st gear, almost full throttle all the way. In three hours I think I burned over half the tank. Is this normal? OT. Will horses or calves eat that creeping jenny? Or should I pull it out of the windrows?

The SH will use slightly more, but--When I was a kid on the farm, I typically drove our H from 7AM-Noon, 1 PM--5:30 PM. Filled it morning and at noon. Occasionally forgot to put gas in at noon -- it would run dry about 3-4 PM. That is about 7 hours on 17.5 gallons at WOT, full load when doing tillage, or 2.5 gallons/hour. If you burned half a tank, 8.75 gallons in 3 hours that converts to 2.9 gallons per hour. Not scientific, but it seems to work. Sounds like you were fully loaded. Most of the tillage I did was "full load" in 3rd gear, would not pull in fourth. Plowing was fully loaded in 2nd, that would be the max fuel consumption, probably very close to your 2.9 gph. I think yours is normal.

With my 1954 SH i put about 5 gallons of gas in and raked has for about 4 hrs in 4th gear at a little more than an idle and i still have about 1 gallon left in the tank. Cheapest gas tractor i have ever owned. Cheapest diesel was my 350D!

Mitch, I have a 350 D and it is the most economical tractor of any kind I have ever used. That is until you go to buying parts, but all diesel parts are high. I have pulled a 2 row Mechanical transplanter with 4 people and 300 gallon water tank plus plants for most of 3 days setting tobacco. Of course that is at low engine speeds. We ran from about 9 A.M. until dark. I would have to add 5 gallons on the third day. I think it holds 17 gallons.

Probably reasonable. One check with variable conditions is tough to estimate. But--- The grass and mower will load an H under those conditions, and if it has a pretty clean exhaust pipe (paper towel wipe test should come back with a modest brown grey smudge rather than a black carbon crustiness. Well i dont know about G.P,H But is she is puffing black at all your using more fuel then you need to. Turn the main metering valve in till she starts to starve at high idel *1700 rpm's* or more. turn the valve back out 1/2 to 3/4 turn this should give you you best fuel econmy. I like to run mine 1 1/4 turns back from it "starving" point,it bumps up the h.p. a bit but you pay the price when you fill up. I look at it this way i gain mabey 10% more horse but use 20% more fuel. but thaats the way i like it. I also turn the rpms up around 2100 rpms or so, so the extra fuel comes in handy when you boot it. I also run the M&W ADD POWER govener its a little bit more demanding then the i.h. govener especally when you run the motor at 115% of rated power. I plan on getting my tractor dyno tested soon. i'm guessin it puts out max 36 horse on the pto and mabey 29 on the bar. i don't know im just guessing. it has around 130 psi comp on each cylinder across the board. I never hold the tractor at more then 1800 rpms for more then 30 seconds even under load. it comes in handy when you come up to a big hill you can dump the gas to her to give her a head start. the amount of gas you used seems ok. i have a H with a belly mover on it and i can mow around 12-15 achers in 2nd on 3/4 of a tank. I dont like to stuff them full of gas as it just make the gas cap bleed more. even with a new cap. i will fill her all the up if im gonna be on the road. i put 40 or 50 miles on a half tank or so im just guessing as i would do field work plus ride on the road. when i need gas i just get gas out of my bulk tank and it dosent show gallons. kinda nice as you don't feel the sting of how much it is nowadays as the gas is pre paid. 300 gallons last me around 4-6 months but i have 4 gas burners tractors and a cub cadet and a grizzley. Plus who knows how much the kids take for there "toys"! oh well my dad always gave me a key to his gas barrle i guess its now my turn. one time dad cought me filling up my car using a funnle because ut is to fat to fit in and he ggave me a a$$ chewin for a week. but he let me use as much as i wanted for the tractors and 4 whellers. he would alway ask me "why do you need 3 engines running at the same time????? that was when gas was .88 cents for fiels gasoline and .77 cents for amoco preimer diesel. i miss being a kid! now to fill all my tanks it can run $3000! 850 gallons of diesel 400 gallons of propaine and 350 gallons of 90 octaine unleaded. but if you want better fuel ecomny try running at 80% throttle that can save big. on my boat motor that is the end of the fuel saver range. I love the H and 4 series tractors. there really easy on gas. and seem to have enough power if you need her to fill in and pull wagons its alittle slower nut better then nothing! We used to bail with a H all the time. we used a over run coupler on the pto so we din;t get hurt. sorry long post.

Haven't figured fuel consumption on my 42 H, but ran it about 5 hours today and went to fill up and still had over half tank left! This is mowing in 4th with my 1110 w/7 foot bar. I figure it's always better to top off than to walk home for a gas can...

Our 544 used 1/4 tank mowing with the 7 foot 100 trailer mower, I think it ran about 8 hours total today.

How do you have your carb set? You should be able to turn the high speed screw in just so it doesn't stumble when you crack the throttle from idle... or at least that's how mine's set.

I'm probably a little rich. I see a little black smoke on some governor bursts. I've been giving the main screw 1/2 turn in last couple of days and it's not stumbling yet. Today's fertilizing day, tommorow roundup a new foodplot site, Tues cut more hay, rake yesterdays cut. Thursday bale. Friday drill the oats and buckwheat for the deer plot. Second cut on the alfalfa not far off. Summer is busy! And get the SMTA done so I can bale with it!
