I'm helpin a friend restore his dad's 1953 Farmall Super M. It needs a new front grill. My question is this -- Do we need to find a grill specifically for a Super M, or will the grill from a regular M also fit the Super M? Are the interchangeable? Thanks for your help and advice. Iowaboy

I don't know if they will swap, or not, but all SM grills aren't the same. My late '52 SM grill appears to be identical to the one on my '49 M except for the different emblem. A neighbor's SM, a stage II, has two larger holes for the bolts that held the brace rods for front-mount 4-row cultivators. Mine has two small holes closer to the center like the M.

After you get past some of the earlier M grills the only differance I ever noticed on interchange between M,SM is the mounting holes for emblem. Reason for showing the same part # is MTA grill was last one IH made for those tractors and was last one sold as a replacement grill for earlier tractors. Sometimes its the radiator off if grill doesn't fit good. There's somewhere around 8 to 12 different # grills from IH not counting aftermarket.

In above post I meant to say different radiators instead of grills near end of post, also besides the MTA style grill with extra holes for culivator brace some grills were like the MTA type but were flat where big holes go. The holes were just not drilled or punched out. Those type grill may have came on some late SM tractors. Never found any 100% proof one way or other,so not going to say its a fact. Latest parts book for M tractors shows 59516 DE grill for tractors 24215 and up which is same grill showing in latest part book for SM and SMTA tractors. most IH people know that origialy all three grills were a little different in looks and emblem mounting. The late parts books were put out after the above tractors were out of production so IH only sold the late grill for replacement until they quit handleing them.If you look at a M parts book dated 4-30-52 it shows grill # 59516 DC.

Look at vintage photos they are different. A M has two small holes in top portion of grill for cultivator support rods. The MTA has these two holes plus two larger holes beneath that, for newer designs.
