544 - Good or Bad

I'm looking for a 50 to 70 hp, gas, row-crop tractor with a wide front end and 3 pt. hitch. There's a 544 coming up at an auction soon that meets my criteria. The tractor looks clean, with decent tires, about 4500 hours on it and a gear drive transmission. But I don't know anything about this model. Were they any good? Did they have any problems that I should be aware of? Are parts available? Is there another model that would be a better choice? And what would be a fair price?

The 544 is a good tractor overall with some exceptions. The rear end and assorted components are designed to handle more power than the engine has, so you shouldn't need to worry about an overstressed tractor. It is nimble, and great for tasks like raking, fluffing, loader work, cutting hay, light baling, etc. However, if you plan on doing any pulling, I would probably go to a different model. The C-200 (which is in this tractor and our 2500A) is rated at 55 horsepower, but it doesn't feel like the same 50 horsepower that a 400 would have. The engine in it is essentially a tightly wound small displacement motor(it only has 35 more cubes than a 350). It has the horsepower at high end, but doesn't have the low end torque of the older M's, 400's etc. It is however, very smooth running and well balanced. If you are doing any pulling or heavy field work, hold out for a 656. They have the pulling power, but are still small enough for light duty.

We have one with the gear drive and shuttle transmission. Very nice handy sized tractor for odd jobs. Easy on fuel and we use it for haying: mowing, raking, and have a quick-tach loader on it to work with the bales. Also run the grain auger, grinder-mixer, etc. with it. Not a heavy duty drawbar pulling machine, in my opinion.

Keep in mind that the 4-cylinder engine is NOT sleeved so if you overhaul you need to bore it and install oversize pistons. Dad overhauled ours and just slapped in new pistons and of course it has piston slap/knock.

If you have specific questions, my email is open...

Hi RSCO A 544 row crop farmall is a very good tractor. I had one that I used on the farm for about 12 years and had no trouble with. If you want a tractor in that hp I would go witch a 656 and get about 10 more hp. Thanks jackie stamper
