On the 966 im getting ,
Is there anything,in the rear end or hydralic,s, that is was a problem like differentiol,s going out or seal,s that go bad?
Why do I hear this junk about some of the 70,a IH,s and 1486,s and that type?
Is here anything to this, or is it just wive,s tale,s, cause someone tried to pull too much weight for that tractor?
Need some IH guy,s to help on this,
K,C,

Here is dad's 1256 with the Exel cab, Exel also made a slightly different version of this cab for IH and IH sold it as their custom cab. Main differences was the IH version was welded together while the Exel was bolted together and the IH version had one more entrance step on each side. Other than those differences, the cabs were pretty much identical. Exel was painte red, the IH version was painted white.

Thanks. Dad bought that tractor new in 1969 but has not owned it since 1982. Have no idea where it is now. That is original paint in the photo, the photo was taken just before our auction in 82. It had about 3200 hours on it in the photo and was just as sweet as it looks and a real runner. Dynoed 180 hp and would flat out walk away from my new 1566 I had in 1976.

the one on the right is definatly a Hiniker. I worked at the Hiniker cab factory for 8 years in the 70s. At that time we were building 20 to 25 cabs per day. I believe there were close to 400 employees. running three shifts. Couldn't push them out the door fast enough.

Kirk: Nothing wrong as a result of someone trying to pull too much weight. A 100hp two wheel drive tractor can't get enough traction for that.

These tractors have now passed the 30 mark, and some of them are plain wore out, I expect some folks call that pulling too much. If had owned them from new, they'd all have 35,000 hours on em by now and would all be worn out.

Kirk; IH manufactured the ROPS cab, and the non ROPS cab was built by a company called Excell. The non ROPS is the one you quite often see on 56 series tractors.

Was the Excell cab referred to as the "diamond" cab?

We need parts for ours on our 1256... I'm going to make a new post. :o)

Gary: On the right is Year-a-Round cab next to it the IH ROPS cab Second from left is diamond cab, so named for the front look and those doors. My diamond cab stated built by Excell. I must admit I have no name for the one on the left. We never saw those come into our area. I have seen them in photos only.

Hiniker and the later Year-a-round cabs look very similar.

Tim: You make a good point, and I should have gone a bit further. I don't believe Hiniker was ever sold here in Canada, at least I've never seen one, other than photos. I agree Hiniker and Year-a-Round look very much alike, thus I've always wondered if it was a design licenced to two different companies. I've also seen the Diamond or Excell cab by another name.

Reasons for this could have been trade duties or tarrifs which ended somewhere between 1972 and 1975. In 1972 I bought my first Case Skid steer, it had duty charged on it, however Thomas was the only manufacturer making skid steers here in Canada, an because they were not supplying 10% of market, I was able to recover that duty. When I bought the second Case skid loader in 75 the duty was gone. Up until that time we also paid that same duty on US built farm tractors. This resulted in companies adding items like cabs, tires, etc. after the tractor arrived in Canada.

Going back into the 50s and 60s we paid about 10% to 15% more for a Farmall than you folks did, using a common dollar for calculations.

I've wondered the same thing about the Year-a-round/Hiniker thing. They're practically identical. Made in the same place and just badged differently? Don't know. I know the topic has come up a time or two but I can't remember anyone ever setting the record straight.

Hugh that one on the left is the same cab as what Allan put on that hydro with the loader.

And no the the far right white one is a Hiniker and says so right on it.But maybe the toy company screwed up when they built it and modeled it after the Year Around cab.

Gary: Take note of what I said to Tim,I think Hiniker and Year-a-Round were same design licenced to two different companies.

I just thought of that other name for Diamond or Excell. We quite regularly saw that same design on Allis and those Fiats that were built for Allis, White, MF, Heston, etc., and it was called a Simms cab. Simms cabs were quite common on backhoes and dozers, numerous makes here in Canada.

Seeing as how that 3rd cab from left in your photo was the only true IH cab, history now tells us the after market caught on that farmers wanted cabs long before tractor manufacturers got the message. Even John Deere's first cabs were built by an assortment of the same after market suppliers. They may try to claim otherwise, but sound gard in the mid 70s was the first true Deere cab.

Mine is the diamond shaped cab - 2nd from the left in your picture.

Is the Exel the one with the hinged doors? I hate those, had door open and backed up one time with a 1456... not a pretty sight.

Wish I could edit my posts.

I may be wrong on the diamond cab it maybe the first one. And the second one is A Year Around.

I'm not sure now.

I'm sure somebody will set us straight.

But I beleive these are the only cabs used until the 86 series.

There were other after market cabs like the cozy and others.
