O/T - Selling on Ebay

Probably a stupid question; but here goes. I am really wary about giving out my financial information over the internet. Ebay asks for credit or debit card information to create a seller's account. I have received several e-mails from Ebay scams in the past asking to update my information. Do you have to do this to actually sell on Ebay?
Thanks,

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I have a few old tractor parts for the Farmall A and Super A. I think I will just list them on the Classified section of YTMAG.

One of the safest ways to buy on line is with a virtual credit card. I have a card thru Citibank that generates a number, 3 digit security code and expiration date that is good for one use. Even if the info gets hacked, the number is not valid for anything else.

Damn, I checked like 5 different auction sites and they all have nothing listed for a few terms that should list at least a hundred items like on ebay. I guess ebay really is a monopoly... I'm screwed... =(

Oh, BTW, ebays feedback system is bull. There is no mediation. People leave negative feedbacks without even trying to resolve anything. You cant limit bidders unless they have lower then -2 feedback. I keep getting people with 0 feedback win my auctions and they never pay and I cant leave them neg feedback cause I'll get the same, so I'm stuck with listing fees. My god, ebay is bullcrap... just bullcrap...

Jay, maybe a bunch of us YT folks just need to make the decision to move over to yahoo or some other site. If enough of us move away from ebay, eventually the rest will follow.

I had a bunch of stuff listed on another absolutely free site. That site even did automatic feeds to the Google search engines, so if anyone was looking for what I had, all they had to do was enter the name of the item into the Google search box, and bingo, there it was. I even tried it myself a few times, and it worked, but after about 3 months, I still had no sales from that site. Apparently people are so brainwashed by eBay that they won't even think to look anywhere else, and that is really sad, because there is a lot of stuff for sale on the internet that is not listed on eBay, and quite often it is better and less expensive, and you don't have to fight with eBay if you have a problem. Talk about sheep being easily led, eBay is the proof.

Way back when I used ID Verify, I have no idea if Ebay still has that. I had to send them a $5 money order and they verified my identity. Then I would just get billed by ebay every month and I just pay it with paypal funds or Send ebay a money order if my paypal funds are low. Right now I need to sell some things so I can pay my bill. Ebay fees are excessive IMHO. Seems I sell about 75$ worth of stuff and end up paying like $11 in ebay fees. I'm going to start listing on yahoo which is free, just set a reserve, if it dont sell, no harm, just put it on the bay then with no reserve since they got ALOT more people, yahoo doesnt and I'm not giving away stuff for 99cents... =)

I've used ebay and paypal for years and never had a problem. Gotta realize that those online businesses couldn't have grown as huge as they are if it was standard procedure to rip people off. According to some consumer-protection sources, giving your credit-card info online(to sources you know are secure) is actually safer than putting a check in the mailbox. Might take awhile for me to believe that, but that"s what they claim.

But like mentioned before, NEVER respond to ANY email claiming to be from ebay, paypal, etc. that you didn"t initiate. Instead go directly to their website(type in the www.whatever- into your address bar) and log on there to your personal account with them. If there actually IS a "problem with your account" or even if they've actually sent you an email, it'll show up there.

For what it"s worth, when I get those suspicious emails from paypal or ebay or wherever, I hold my cursor over the links included in the email and it shows at the bottom of the screen what the link is that they are gonna try to send you to. It"s NEVER been the real web address for ebay or paypal. Usually those names aren"t in the address shown at all.

this is what one needs to do when buying on the internet.

1. open up a seperate checking account
2. then get a debit card for that account. 3. set the limit on the debit card; say the majority of your purchases are $100 or less then set the limit at $100. so any time a purchase is over $100 no transaction can take place.
4. if you do have a purchase over $100 let your bank know so they can raise the cap but have them return it back to $100.

i believe that 4 times in the last 3 years that this method has worked to my advantage.
sincerely,
tim

That would be your best defense. Only fund the checking account for the amount of your purchases, leaving a $20.00 balance to cover unexpected bank fees. Make sure your bank won't "cover" amounts as " customer service" (overdraft protection) but instead sends then back unpaid.

NEVER send credit card info or any financial info by email. Call them, or update it the next time you make a transaction. I frequently, probably too frequently, give credit card info over "secure" sites on the internet. Last summer my credit card number was stolen, I believe from an internet transaction, could have been a local store, but I don't think so. The amount requested was much larger than my usual purchase. That raised a red flag and the card company called me. Once I confirmed that the person calling me was not a scam artist, I had them delete the charges, and got a different number and all is well. I will continue to buy over the internet, but will keep a close eye on the charges via my banks web site.

I have been on Ebay for years and never had any trouble. Just don't believe anything you receive from email. They look very real. If there is any question that you might have to do something the email says, go to your Ebay account seperate from your email and check it.

The real Ebay does not send you emails and ask you to reply to ANYTHING. They only want you to reply using the Ebay dot com web sight. Any email from Ebay asking for something, is not from Ebay.
