A month or so ago I converted my M to 12 volt (per BobM's most excellent schematics). I put the loader back on and can't use the crank anymore...

Last night I was trying to figure out why the alternator isn't charging, and while confirming that I had wired the DPDT switch correctly I touched the mag ground wire to a hot terminal momentarily. Now the darn tractor won't start. Could I have fried something in the magneto? It's an American Bosch MJH 4C301.

How can I test the coils and condensor? It was too dark to start pulling the cap to check points. I did try to see if there was spark at the plug wire, but couldn't tell, too long a reach from the starter button to the plug wire. Tonight I'll pull the plugs to make sure they're good (it has a bad habit of fouling the plugs really bad).

Local NAPA counterman had the condenser and points. Lance knows his beans, told what I needed them for and he said, "I can have them this afternoon" before we got to part numbers.

It's 16 degrees and foggy with light snow falling. Perfect weather for mechanic work. Sure wish I'd left the loader UP instead of down. Might have been able to move it inside.

I figure replacing them now is not a bad move. I've had the tractor for 7 years, and who knows when the points were last replaced. Probably the original condenser.

I have the Farmall parts book, but the American Bosch doesn't show up in there. Was this a replacement at some time, or a little known option?

The wire from the mag goes to a sw thats grounded and not 12v. Mite just have burnt the points i would clean them then see if there is fire to the plugs. Since you say just momentary shouldnt be too bad. If no fire put a new condenser. I put my mags in the vice wire up the coil put a wire to a good plug then turn them over with a battery powered drill and watch for spark cause if it dont have any fire mounted in the vice and turning over it sure wont have any mounted on the tractor.

10-4 on mag wire. I was reaching around the loader frame and pushed the wire with my coat sleeve or glove. A little spark, no big blue flashes or black marks on the coat.

I plan to open up the mag this afternoon. Supposed to be about 15 degrees with flurries here on the Colorado front range. About right for working with small delicate parts outdoors.

Don't know where Magman is. However, I got a rebuilt mag from him last fall. The instructions that came with it said NEVER....Never put power to the mag grounding terminal, it will fry the magneto internally. So it sounds like that is what you did. If you want Magman's email, send me and Email and I will reply with the email address. Don't want to post it.

If you catch a warm day take her out on the road and pin her back and ride, sometimes it does wonders for them. Good Luck.

What I can't figure out is why 15 mph os so fast on the M, and so slow in the truck!

Finally found a manure spreader at a realistic price and have been spreading the manure piles on the pasture. 5th gear out and back, and it's a thrilling ride! Better then the '62 Austin Healey sprite we used to have. And that spreader bounces.

I dont know much magneto`s,I have 8 gasoline farmall`s all have distributers. If your tractor fouls plugs regularly it probably is burning to rich you need to try adjusting your carb.I dont have any trouble with my tractors fouling, but I farm with my tractors, and pull them hard enough to keep them going, mayby the old gal needs a good workout.

I'm sure she's running rich. And that carb adjustment is one of those things "on the list". Heck, it only took two years to ut the loader back on after finding the lift arms I needed!

The old girl gets a couple hours a month at most. The only time I run it long enough to really warm up is when I'm moving snow.

You may need to close main jet adjusting screw to lean out the carburetor. Under heavy pulling
like plowing or disking you may need to open it.
Hal
PS; You probably fried the condenser.
