If the cables are still there then hook them up to the post they fit. Then turn on lights and see if the ammeter goes to discharge, if so you are correct for the wiring. Many early diesels kept the same polarity as the 6 volt systems they just went to 12 volts for cranking power and in some cases they just turned up the generator voltage and even kept the same starter. Point is that the generator and regulator needs to match the battery polarity, and they can be either. Cars went to negative ground first and many tractors stayed positive ground for a long time afterwards. All alternators are negative ground unless specifically made to replace a positive ground generator-rare.

IF it is still stock with a genarator then it is 12 volt Pos. ground But who knows what has been done to it over the years .

I am not sure ,but I think if it still has a generator it is probably positive ground.

Many of the MD-SMD-SMTAD-400-450 were 12v (I owned a 48 MD stock 12V). They were positive ground if stock generator system was still on it. None were Neg ground. If it has an alternator, it is 99.99% going to be Neg ground. and will smoke like crazy if hoohed up backward. Good luck, and keep us informed. JimN

All the 12 volt systems that I know of are all negative ground. Never in my life had I seen a 12 volt system that was positive ground. Six volt systems are positive ground. If you switch your grounds you will have some problems.

Sorry Wisconsin, They do exist in a variety of machines, both with generators, and alternators. (the latter are not common, but are out there) JimN

Yep, my MTAD is 12v positive ground. Every old farmall diesel I've ever seen has been that way.
