I trying to find out when did IH start using the FA in the serial numbers.

FA=Farmall series A, IA=International series A, the AV, B and BN were versions. If you go to Case IH website follow link to search for parts and hit 'starts here' link, then type in Farmall A, under general info you will see a note near the end of the page that tells when the "B" designation began by serial number.

Some sources show BN serial # 39715 to 48350 as using prefix FAA and suffix X7 and after 48350 using FABN prefix.
