Took the engine out of my H now I am wondering what to do. Should I bore it put in sleeves and go with the 3 1/2 in or should I drop the sleeves go sleevless and go with the 3 9/16. I know I will get more power with the bigger bore but what is the best for the block and the longest lasting? Will be using it mostly for pulling but might what to take it to a parade or two, maybe even hook it to a mower or a plow. What do you think Chad S?

I built an engine for my H with no sleeves and 3 9/16 pistons. If the block ever wears out I can then have it bored to take the larger 300/ 350 sleeves. Makes a pretty strong puller.

I totally agree with RustyFarmall. While it is your block and you are free to do with it what you want, just remember one day when u need another block cause the one you went sleeveless is worn out and cant be bored anymore. By then it will be alot harder then it is now to find one. Just something to think about.

bore it to the 350 barrel size,,, turn the 350 sleeve flange down to the H specs, drop in the sleeves and you have a 3-5/8 bore piston with alot of options once your to this cubic inch,,,,, JMHO,, thats the cheapest and BEST way to do it,,, ChadS

Hydro,

My local machine shop seems to think the block would be stronger by just dropping the sleeves and going sleevles using the 3 9/16 pistons rather than spending the money and boring the block.If he was to bore it I think he would want to go with the 3 1/2 in sleeve and pistons. We now have the 3 7/16 in. bore with the flat top piston.

If you do bore to accept a 3 1/2" sleeve, you will not need to bore any more to install the 3 9/16" thin wall sleeve. It worked well for me. You need to be aware of one more thing. If you bore the H block and use the H head you need to relieve or grind a small area of the combustion chamber to accept the larger pistons. If you use a super H head I don't think you'll have any problems.

I had the local machine shop bore my H block to Super H specs. You can then install the 3 9/16 thin wall sleeves and pistons. It's no different than going from 3 3/8 to 3 7/16, you will still have a sleeve. I pulled the tractor for three years and it's been on an auger for 25 years. No problems.

The numbers do not add up--if they do, I have never seen them---"I thought" that the largest sleeve for the H was the 3 7/16 bore.

I am not sure that your idea of boring the block to accept a larger piston without sleeves will work on this engine..but in all events, I would prefer my pistons to be sliding up and down in a steel sleeve--simply because when the wear out you can pull them and put another set in. I think I would put in 3 7/16 stepped pistons with sleeves.

Tom, I gotta agree, as far as I know, no one is building new engine blocks for an H. If you run one without sleeves and wear it out, you will have a very expensive repair bill, or send that worn out block to China and hope you can find another block. Way too much of our stuff is already going to China.
