1948 Farmall Super A, converted to 12 volt...

A while ago I had to rev the engine up as far as it would go to get the alt to kick in. When I did this it would peg all the way over past 20 amps change and then slowly work back down to 4 or 5 amps charge.

I decided I didnt like this so I took the alt off and had a smaller pulley put on and a little bigger gap on the pulley where the belt would fit down in there better. Got it back on and now the alt kicks in right off and charges at about 4 amps no matter the throttle.

Today when I brought it inside I turned the lights on and looked at the amp meter and it showed a discharge of about 4 amps. Turned the lights off and it kicked back to charge. I did that a few times and then I thought it shouldnt do that cause it would eventually discharge the battery if the lights were on for a long time. I did rev it back up for a little while but it didnt change anything, might not have let it rev up long enough.

I didnt drive it or let it run very long to check it out any more.

Does the discharge sound right?

dont get tto carried away getting the belt too tight as then you will nock out the hub on the fan unless you have changed to the newer style with bearings. I have a B with the delco standard pulleys and so it charges a bunch after starting but slows down when warm.

First off, check to be sure your belts aren't slipping... fan belt could be loose, or the alternator belt could be "bottoming" in the alternator pulley and slipping.

You got it Bob.

I checked the belt this morning and it appeared tight but I went ahead and tightened it some more. I could tell it sat down in the pulley more after I had done that. So I started it and bingo it did just what it was suppose to do. I know I made sure last night it wasnt slipping but I guess it was such a small slip I couldnt tell.

I was so upset last night I had allready started pricing new ones. lol Now if I can just solve the rest of my problems that easy.

Thanks guys.

Have you measured the charging voltage at the battery? I think something happened to your regulator. Is this an external regulator or does the alternator have an internal regulator built in? You should have somewhere around 13.5 to 14.5 volts with the engine speed at 3/4 throttle
at the battery. Hal

Its a Delco Remy (10SI ?). Guess that has an internal regulator.

Before I had the smaller pulley put on I was getting a higher charge. The Alt shop that put the pulley on checked it out to make sure it was a one wire but I dont know if they checked anything else, I didnt ask them too cause it all worked. Just dont see how changing the pulley could have messed anything up.

I dont have anything to check it with so Ill have to take it somewhere if it aint working right.

You can get a small multi-meter at Radio Shack for about $20.00. They're very useful to have around your home too. Be sure to select dc volts and set it on the 20 scale. Hal

If you have a volt meter I would check that charging voltage before you pull the alternator.
That alternator does have an inernal regulator.
It must be charging if your amp meter shows a charge. Does the battery crank the engine ok when the engine is cold? I think that amp meter should show more than a 4 amp charge when you first start the tractor then gradually decrease the rate of charge as the battery is recharged. The way you described what was happening before you changed pulley's is about normal with your amp meter showing 20 amps then decreasing as the battery is recharged. Hal

Yeah , Remember that it's only a 20 amp gauge and that alternator puts out an excess of 20 amps so the gauge will peg till the battery is charged back up , usually within a couple minutes . Seems to me that if the battery is top notch that you shouldn't have 4 amps going into it all the time but you may not have run it long enough . It definently shouldn't discharge when the lights are on . Like the others said make sure the belts tight and in the right spot in the groove . A multi meter is pretty cheap so you might want to buy one . Good luck . ...Randy
