Electrall gearbox pictures

I've mentioned before that I was considering the remanufacture of the Electrall gearbox. I finally removed it today from my Farmall 400.

The gearbox is a constant mesh, non shifted, live power source. The gear you see is an idler. It has 39 teeth and meshes with the same gear that drives the IPTO shaft. The gearbox is bolted just ahead of the belt pully gearbox but the two are totally separate. The Electrall gets its power ahead of the TA and the belt pulley gets its after the TA. The idler drives a gear (12 teeth) and shaft that extends out of the housing and accepts the large pulley as seen below.

I was surprised at the date code 1-29-A. I had assumed that the Electrall was installed at the factory to showcase the new attachment and the new 400 together. My 400 serial # is 519 and was built with Z casting codes.

Yeah Carl, I wonder why we weren't offered stuff like air compressors, more hydraulic capacity, even tractor seat with powered lumbar massagers.

I am not a farmer, but I have always wondered whether that mid-mount PTO was used with some types of harvesting equipment. I look at pictures of cotton harvestors and bean pickers and wonder where all the power came from.

some cornpickers were powered off the belt pulley drive. The pulley was removed and a chain sprocket added. In our case the belt pulley was used at least twice a week on the hammer mill most times three times. The B filled in when M was tied up. Too bad we didnt know there was a bigger pulley avail for the B or it could have ground just as fast as the M.

Wardner, if I read the farmall hundred series book by Guy Fay and Andy Kraushaar right. Farmall 400 tractors serial numbers 501 to 2454 were asembled in november of 1954. Your tractor is early enough that it had no engine dipstick and cast rear wheels like the SM and MTA. Since electrall was considered a attachment I wonder if most if not all were dealer installed.

It is clear that my Electrall was installed after the tractor was shipped. My tractor went to Eastern CT. I am the third owner. The second owner bought it for resale at the estate auction. He said the original owner wanted a SMTA but availabilty was limited. The Electrall was available in July 1954. One might assume the farmer thought highly of this new attachment and ordered it as soon as he had a tractor he could bolt it to.

We both know that attachments are installed at the factory as well as at the dealer. Belt pullies, IPTO, tranny driven PTOs, fast hitches, service meters, power steering, and more were all specified on a line setting ticket. Maybe even wheel weights. Of course the dealer could add those items as well.

It does appear that the Electrall attachment might not have been available for factory installation. The reason might be something as simple as making the tractor more difficult or costly to ship.

Before seeing the casting code, I assumed the factory had "forced" the Electrall on some dealers in order to give it some exposure.
