It sat for a couple of weeks some time back. Was fine when I shut it off. When I started it, it runs rough now when taking off or going up slight inclines. Have changed the gas filter but that's about all. It seems to be getting gas ok but it smells strange too when running. Idles fine. Any hints? Thanks

Several possible answers:
Adjust the high speed jet on the carb (if it has one). It is on the lower front of the carb. Turn it out 1/4 turn at a time (keep track of its position to be able to return it). If this clears up the issue turn it in till it begins to act up, then out 1/4 turn.
New plugs may be needed. If carb adjustment did no good, look at the plugs especially if the miss is very regular, indicating one cylinder is missing consistently.
There may be a piece of trash in the hole of the main jet in the carb. Take off the bowl, and use a can of carb cleaner on the components visible from there, especially the holes and jets.
another possible trouble spot is the screen at the connection of the fuel line to the carb (often overlooked). Good luck, keep us informed as to the outcome. JimN

Turns out it was plugs and the spark plug wire boots were split and shorting out. Runs great again. Thanks Jim
