I"m looking at an IH 963 corn head (to replace my 843). Does anyone know if they had problems? Should I pay the extra and get a 1063? I thought that I heard somewhere that the gearboxes were a problem on the 900 series heads, but the guy selling it says no (of course). He also has 3 1063s there, so you wouldn"t think that he"s telling too much of a story. It is in good condition, with good tin and lots of knife left on the rolls.
Any info?
I also posted this in the combines forum, so please don"t shoot me. You are the guys that I know the best!

There was a factory recall on all 900 corn heads. All gear box were sent back to the factory to be rebuilt. The new gear box's had coil springs on the slip clutch just like the 1000 heads. The old box's had belvue springs. Compare the 963 head to the 1063 heads to see if they are the same. This recall was over 20 years ago so I doubt if there are any old gear box's left. Stan

Thanks for the info. I will look for Bellville washers vs. coil springs. Presumably if they had that update, they would also have the updated gears that IaGary was talking about, right? Would that make the 900 series head the same as or "just as good" as the 1000 series? This particular one is in nice shape, just as good as the 1063s that he has there, and I hate to pay the extra $1500 just to get the extra digit in the model number, if that"s the only real difference.
Thanks
Paul

On the 900 series heads there was a factory update kit that was put in the gear boxes.

If the 900 does not have this update stay away from it or pay to put it in.

There are snap rings in the gear boxes that would pop off and the gears slide over and no longer mesh.

The update was new gears that contained the snap ring so it could not pop out of the groove.

Other wise there is no big change to the 1000 series corn heads.

Hi Gary- how can a person tell if the update has been done to the gearboxes? It sounds like they both had snap rings, so even if I took a cover off to look in, how would I know which was which? Any idea on what it may cost to do the update if it hasn"t already been done?
By the way, are you near Waverly? My friend Keith Bohle is having his plow day this Saturday, Nov 11th over in Sumner and I"m hoping to get there, maybe with my 600. It would be good to see you there too.
Thanks for the good advice.

P

The only way to tell for sure is to pull an end cap on the gear box and look.

If the snap ring is on the end of the gear "no update". If the snap ring is inside the edge of the gear it has been updated.

I'd make the dealer check or guarantee in writing that the update was done.

I'm south of Waverly about 80 miles so its not to far but my nephew plays football for Luther and I havn't made a game this year and he's a senior so I have that commitment this Saturday.

Thank you for the education. It sounds like there is a counter bore in the outside end of the gear that the snap ring fits in, right? I will be looking at that before I commit to it.
Sorry you can"t get there Saturday. Thanks again.
Paul
