I recently purchased a super C tractor.I have replaced the battery a couple times now. Something keeps killing it. Any ideas where the problem might be? Also,It will start and run for a few minutes before running out of gas. I replaced the filter and added a gas treatment. would it be the carburetor and can this be done without much mechanical background? Icleaned out the glass bulb and it now leaks, would it be the gasket, where can I find one? Thanks for the help.

I just bought an old '54 Super C with a similar fuel problem. It runs for a few minutes then sputters a lot and shuts down. It will restart, run for a minute or two, become rough and sputter to a stop. I am planning on replacing the old zenith carburetor on it (355485R91 11115B), but have also considered that it acts as though the choke is closed on it and isn't opening up as it warms up. Anyone know if there is a choke that might be sticking on these things?

Get rid of the fuel filter first. I'm guessing that there's a rubber fuel line with an inline filter in it. There should be a hard steel line running from the sediment bowl straight to the carburetor. No filter.

The carburetor is probably filthy inside and needs to be cleaned. No time like the present to become mechanically inclined. You bought the tractor for reasons other than "pwetty wed twaktor" I would assume, and one of those reasons is that you wanted to tinker with it. Welp, learning how to rebuild a carb is Tinkering 101. :)

Electrical system's probably a wreck too. Tinkering 102 is diagnosing electrical problems. For now, quit killing batteries and disconnect the battery from the tractor when you get done tinkering for the day.

How is the wire insulation? Sometimes the original cotton covered wire will develop worn spots which in time might short through to ground. Could possibly be a bad wire in back of the switch/ gage panel, which means taking out the battery.

A few questions first. Is it still a 6 volt system or a 12 volt one?? If 6 volt then you probably have a bad V.R. and that drains the battery and that will kill a batterey. If 12 volts you have a short in the alterntor. Another thing is a dead short in one of the wires which will also drain the battey. As far as the carb problem remove the drain plug from the bottom of the carb, turn on the gas and catch the gas. You need to have a good steady flow of gas for 5 minutes or more. If you don't have a good flow take the line loose from the carb and check there for a good steady flow. If you have a good steady flow at the line but not the drain on the carb you have a problem in the carb and it will need to be rebuilt

Take he sediment bowl to your NAPA dealer so you get the correct size they are only 2bucks or so. Have to be rubber but check the housing as someone mite have overtightened and sprung the housing and it will be no good. They will also have the screens.

You probably have restricted gas flow from the tank to the separator. Lot's of rust and crud. You may have to pull the tank and clean it. I found that the inline filters can cause more grief than they cure. You can get gaskets at your IH dealer, or you can make a homemade on out of gasket material from your local Napa store. I don't have a clue what could be killing your battery.
