I have spent several hours pouring over the help you have provided and the manual, but I cannot make it work.

The picture shows what I know. The first pole has an open contact and has 0 ohms. The next one has a closed contact, is labeled A and has 7 ohms. The final one has a closed contact and has 1 ohm.

I have hooked the F wire to the generator and the A terminal to the A terminal on the generator. The final pole I have hooked to the voltage gauge and then to the battery terminal on the ignition.
The ignition then goes to the starter solenoid and the other pole on the starter goes to the correct connector on the ignition coil.

When I turn on the ignition it turns the motor over but there is no spark.

I have not found where the battery lead goes. When I put it on the B/L terminal of the voltage regulator it shorts out. Same when I put it on the battery pole of the ignition. (It is the same as putting it on the B/L terminal of the VR).

It doesn"t look as bad as the pic indicates, and there aren"t any obvious mechanical defects, shorts, etc.
Please help!

Thanks in advance!!

Matt, Okay, if you measured the ohms between those VR terminals and the VR's case/frame/ground

The VR terminal that reads open label it BAT The VR terminal that has that 7 ohms ARM The VR terminal that reads near 0 ohms FLD

Many of those VR are labeled BAT ARM FLD in that order but I cant say for sure what yours is HOWEVER if the ohms readings you say are correct and you label n use the terminals as I stated above THAT OUGHT TO BE CORRECT.....

Then wire its BAT terminal up to the load side of the ammeter, thats the side thats NOT to the battery/starter. Both sides of the ammeter plus the BAT terminal on the VR (once wired to ammeter) must ALWAYS read hot battery voltage.

The FLD terminal to the gennys Field post

The ARM terminal to the Gennys Arm post

Then POLARIZE the genny by momentarily flash jumping a wire from the BAT terminal over to the ARM terminal and you ought to get a spark !!!! IF THERES NO SPARK, the VR's case may not be well grounded to the Genny (or wherever its mounted) or the genny itself isnt well grounded

If you had a 4 pole VR with the extra 4th LOAD terminal, it would provide hot battery voltage up to the lights n ignition HOWEVER with only a 3 pole VR, those loads are fed their hot battery voltage from the ammeters Load (NOT to battery/starter) terminal, the same terminal that wires to the VR's BAT terminal.

Label the VR terminals as I suggested,,,,, ,hook it up as I suggested,,,,, Polarize the Genny,,,,, see what happens,,,,, ,let us know

best wishes n God Bless

John T

I'm a little confused when you say you haven't found where the battery lead goes? Here is a basic hookup that should give you spark.

Reg F to gen F (field) Reg A to gen A (armature) Reg B to (hot when on post) switch.

Coil + to (hot when on post) switch Coil - to points If you wire it like this and get a short then the gen, reg,or switch has an internal short. Or something else is wired wrong.

Where are you seeing the labels for the regulator terminals... printed on the regulator cover?

Are there any markings on the terminal tabs, next to the screws?

Link loading="auto" style="width:auto;height:auto" alt="Third Party Image">">Link

IMHO, the terminals SHOULD be labeled "BATT", "ARM", "FLD"., reading from left to right.

What tractor are you working with? GENERALLY, you should have ignition power even with the voltage regulator completely removed.

Bob, I AGREE 100% That n a buck may get you a cup of coffee at a cheap regular (NOT Starbucks) diner lol

Besides, seems like MOST 3 Pole VR's use that orientation,,,,, ,,,, Its the 4 poles that can be different with the ARM terminal often off on a side or the bottom all by itself, seems like they are often BAT FLD LOAD there all together

"GENERALLY, you should have ignition power even with the voltage regulator completely removed. "

Yes, unless the coil is being energized from the B terminal on the regulator.
