I managed to get the oil changed. I put the new filter element in, and changed out the gasket. I made sure I cleaned out the gasket channel really good. Put it all back together really tight, and it leaks at the gasket in one place, right on the outward most side. Can someone give me some time to get it to stop?

Ok, well I looked at it today. It looks like the outer rim, has been rebuild by weld at some point. Almost invisible until you look into the groove where the gasket sits. It looks deeper there. I"m not sure what to do to fix it, I don"t think I can get in ther nad get a clean enough weld to fill it. The old ghasket sealed, but I fumbled with this one for about 30 minute today.

Any ideas? I wondered if I could degreade it with carb cleaner and put som sort of RTV into it? But I"m not sure what I would need or if it would work.

Gasket sealer might work.

You could take it to a machine shop and have them deepen the groove and face off the top a little to get to clean metal, maybe.

Or you could probably find a replacement for $15.

Yup, my guess would be there is still an old gasket in there. It takes a narrow sharp tool to get to the bottom of the groove. And while you have it apart, check the canister to make sure the edge is not nicked. They are not hard to seal if done right. Don't over tighten and crush the top in.

One important thing to do is always coat the new gasket with a thin layer of oil. Without oil the gasket will bind up and not seat properly, the oil lubricates the gasket to ensure it doesnt bind up...

You don't really need to oil the gaskets on the cartridge style filters since the gasket sees no movement during tightening.

Chad,
Are you real sure that you got all the gasket out of the groove?? I"ve seen nore than one truck, car and tractor have an old gasket stuck in the groove that causes a leak. Those old gaskets that get left in there get hard as a rock and look and act all the world like metal. HTH, Larry

did you spin it tight

really tight

or really really tight.

to tight is too much or the gasket has a twist and that happens a lot

rubbing alcohol and a pipe cleaner works better( no distilate residue) you can put rtv in there but you have to go all the way around and then squeeze it out with the gasket-( going around it like you would with a piston ring). put a little oil on the gasket and lightly tighten the housing down, but not to tight--its just to get a level-square gasket. let it dry a couple hours and then tighten it to specs. no more gasket problems...
