I got the oil seals today from C&G. I ordered the felt washers for the rear axles but my transmission and final drive service manual doesn't mention the felt washers. Where and/or which side of the seal are they installed? What is the purpose of the felt washers? Also, some automotive seal instructions say to put a light coating of silicone around the outside of the seal before installation. Does this hold true for tractors also? Since I don't have seal drivers for these what is the best way to install them. Thanks, David.

I've installed automotive transmission and rear end seals with a hammer being sure to keep them going in even. Do I just need a bigger hammer for these BIG seals? LOL, David.

A crude way that works is to use a block of wood to protect the seal. They should go in easily.

Silicone(RTV) on the outside and oil on the inner lip.

Felt washers are usually dust shields so they go on the outside of the seal -- I don't have a 240, but that's what the parts CD shows.

As to installation, anything to make them slide easily. Easier for me to use some motor oil, rather than silicone that I seldom use.
