I have a 51 M with live hydraulics (the pump is NOT the M&W). I live in WY so wheather can fluctuate quite oftenI have been having some probs lately with the hydraulics. The pump is starting to leak a little & I lose lifting power after moving round bales. After it sits & the oil cools, it works fine again. Right now I use the HY-TRANS oil, but I was wondering what other kind of oil I can use to "thicken" up a bit & try to resolve the problem. I have done numerous searches on this site with a result of numerous answers. Can you please let me know what you reccommend & if I should be replacing to see if I can get to the bottom of my question.

i whole heartedly agree with hugh. the pump is worn out. these pumps are designed to have .002 clearance between the gears and the aluminum case. usually the ones i take apart are .006 or so. the m+w pumps will take a little more abuse from no filter in the system because the pump housing is cast iron.

Hydraulic fluids are rated as one of three classifications, Iso 32-46 or 68. The 32 is the lightest and made primarily for piston type pumps and some ring and vane pumps. 32 thins quickly and shouldn't be used in an M. An ISO grade 46 is probably the best, but a 68 would be okay for the M pump.

Granger: New pump is the only answer. I've been reading and not saying much since our e mails. This revelation about loader working decent when cold convinces me pump is the only answer.

You can keep using it, but your probably circulating metal grindings through the system. Cleaning that out will only add to your problems later on. There really is no better oil unless it's John Deere Torque Guard. It's expensive, but might be worth it with the new pump. My experience is now 25 years old, so probably Hy tran and Torque Guard are the same oil and price by now.

Hi Hugh. Didn't the old H's and M's use the same oil that you used in the engine..ie)30 weight engine oil. I agree that the pump may be the problem but I was always under the impression the heavier engine oil worked better than hy trans in these old tractors, just curious...Mike

The belly pumps use 30w but if it has a live pump it should take hydraulic fluid. Any standard hydraulic fluid might be worth a try, but unless the valve is worn out, I agree with Hugh that the pump needs attention.

30w in a hydraulic system would work fine this summer, but come winter it may cause some emchanical failure by being too stiff on a cold morning.
