Farmall H Carb Problems?

I have a gas 1940 Farmall H. Could not get it to run without almost full choke. I verified govenor adjustments as correct. I rebuilt the carb. Started right up with choke open. It surges at idle unless I close the choke about 1/4 of the way. Neither the idle mixture screw or the main jet screw seem ot have any effect on the way it runs. Any ideas?

Sometimes I think no matter how clean you think you have everything in the carb there still is some small piece of dirt in there someplace hiding to cause you problems when you start the tractor. I just rebuilt the carb on my Super H a couple weeks ago including soaking it in carb cleaner, blowing out all the passages, and spaying a second time with carb cleaner and blowing out again. I went out to mow and the tractor acted like it was out of gas when I put it under a load. Then it seemed to clear itself. This week I was mowing some tough weeds and stuff for the neighbor and the tractor ran perfect. I shut off the tractor before driving home and when I restarted it, it would start and then die. It did that several times and then ran OK. Now I am gun shy about using it away from home. Roger

If the mixture screws so not make any difference when you adjust them, the carb is not clean!!
The idle air jet is the likely culprit. It does not come out of the bowl easily; use your best screwdriver and it must fit perfectly. If you damage it, new ones are available. I drilled one out, bought a replacement jet at the local IH dealer($15 or so), went to a gunsmith to determine the correct thread tap size, bought a tap, re-threaded the hole and all was well again. It is a #5 machine screw size. Get one from your local gunsmith.
Take your time and use progressively larger drill bits to remove the old material.
I would suggest getting the new jet first to have a size reference.

Same problem on all 3 of the tractors I have worked on in the last year and on every one of them it came down to dirt in the carb passages and I didn't fix any of them the first time I worked on them but with due deteremination they all work fine now.

Alot of the times when this happens its becuase you did not get the carb clean enough you can soak them untill the cows come homes 6 times and blow them out and everything but unless you take a small piece of wire and work every little hole and orfice and use spray cleaner and such sometimes you dont get them all clean. This is the biggest culpret for a carb that will not adjust when you get it rebuilt. But yes check for the vacum leak first. But most of the time they will run different from cold to hot when the intake is leaking. JON

I would check the float level in the carb, and the fuel passages to the needles. Was the carb soaked then blown out, or just cleaned with a spray? sometimes the varnish is so tough that spray is only partially effective. JimN

I first used carb cleaner spray through all passages. Then soaked it for a week. Prior to reassembling, i washed again and blew all passages out with air.

I did adjust the float level prior to assembly. from the gasket to the top (actually bottom) of float was set at 1-27/32".

I believe you did it well, If no other cure works, raise the level 1/32 at a time (with carb on) and see if it helps. JimN

Intake leak at head or carb to manifold. Can also be a manifold that has a hole burnt internally from the exhaust side into the intake side there in the middle where the exhaust and intake are cast together. This is a common problem as I have fixed several because of this. Good luck with the H.

air intake leak or try setting the idle up a bit...

When is the last time you checked the timing???
