Ok folks, here"s the deal. 1955 300 RC. Owned it for about 12 years. Over the years did the usual tune ups, carb rebuild (once several years ago). Always fired right up, never used the choke. Started getting hard to start, then would not start at all. To date I"ve changed the points, condencer, ( plugs are not new but all fire)checked the valve back lash at .020 cold, rebuilt the carb, replaced the float(finding it with gas in it) replaced the coil, with new and other used ones, hooked it up with and without the resister, put a hot(new) battery on it, checked the timing to the first mark, removeing #1 plug to assure both valves were closed and the piston was at the top. NOTHING, again, and again, NOTHING not even a hint of a hit.(fresh gas by the way). I"ve restored many of these over the years, and brought many back from the dead (Letter series, and hundred series) but "OLD FAITHFUL" wont go. It does not smoke unless you but a heck of a strain on her for a long time,(Hours) and even then, it"s just a wisp of blue every now and then. I hate to admit it, but I"m stumped!! What have I missed?

hey, i actually had the same thing happen on a 140 friday. i tracked it down to a wire coming from the regulator to the ignition switch. the insulation was checked and cracked. i had a little fire at the points after changing everything i could in the distributor, and a little at the plugs every now and then. turns out that wire and the one going to the coil were on the same post on the switch, and the cracked wire was an easier ground than going through the distributor. so i replaced the wire from switch to regulator and it runs like it used to. hope this helps. nate

When you pull the choke knob out make sure the choke plate in the carb is completely closed. The 300's i've worked on will not start unless the choke plate is completely closed.

If you have a good hot blue spark at the plugs, I would try new plugs. Sounds like they fouled up when the float sank. Squirt some oil in each cyl to restore compression. Try again & post the results.

Are you getting any fire at the sparkplugs? If you are, I think you should run a compression check on the engine. Hold your hand over the carburetor throat while someone tries to start the tractor. You should have good suction on your hand. If you don't, that be may your problem
since that indicates no intake manifold vacuum. Hal

If you turn it over several times and pull one of the pluggs is it dry or wet? If dry then your not getting gas to the cylinder. If wet, your not getting enough spark or incorrect timing. You can try putting a small amount of gas in each plug hole using a squirt gun, etc, put the plugs back in finger tight and see if it will at least fire. Also, have you checked the oil level? If the crank case if full of gas or watter it won't start. Dave.

PS Carefull around the gas!

Hi Look where the wire goes the distributor housing the insultor may be bad. If you hook a dewl meter to it it will have no reading on the needle, telling you it is ground out, but you will still see a spark. It's a fun condition. P/S you might not see the problem with your eyes.

My old "M" did the same this last spring. I shut off the gas, took off the gas line to the carb, turned the gas back on, no gas-----the gas line shut off on the bottom of the tank was plugged ! Cleaned out the tank, hooked it all back up, and been trouble free since. My 2 cents.

Pull the air cleaer tube off and hold you hand over the carb. Turn the engine over and see if you get gas on your hand. If you don't then you have a fuel problem. If you do it might start for you. I've had problems like your haveing and done that can the dumb things start and run well after doing that. Also doing that will tell you if you have a clogged air cleaner or a bad intake gasket

How is the compression? You say the spark is good- blue ? Are the intake gaskets leaking air? If you have compression, fuel, & spark, & the engine is timed close, it should at least give a pop.

Spark is yellow with some blue in it, mostly yellow I think. I have changed out several coils, with and without the resister as well as the points and cond., but still mostly yellow. I have watched to be sure the coil was not "leaking" spark to adjoining surfaces, and saw none.

When checking the air intake, if the cleaner is ok then blow out the pipe using a rag for a seal and air hose. Wasp/hornet nest clogged. ? Bob

biggerred - before you go any further you might check the spark timing:

Rotate the engine by hand until the single notch on the crank pulley is in register with the timing pointer. Now pop the distributor cap - the rotor button terminal should be directly under either the #1 or #4 plug wire tower.

If it's NOT, likely the cam drive gear hub as broken or the keyway stripped out causing the timing to go way off.

Cam gear failure is not uncommon with lettered and numbered Farmalls equipped live hydraulic pumps like your 300. I've replaced several on Super M's, 400's, etc.
