I have an A without the original seat brackets and serial number tag. It has the Dzus fasteners holding the hood, so I take it to be either a 1939 or 1940 as pictures of 1041's and up have the "J" holddowns. The PTO is the smaller obsolete size (before the 1-3/8 became standard). Since I have electric start, my guess is a 1940., but I've recently heard that electric start was an option on 39's. Does anyone know when the PTO size was changed ?

Mornin Captcarl, You cant go by the PTO size, I have a 42 A and that has the smaller PTO. Try cleaning the area on the engine right under the #1 spark plug there should be a serial # stamped there. Providing that its the original engine you can get a date. Also you can check your casting numbers on various parts pf the tractor. My 49 Super A has the larger PTO and Im not sure where the change was made. Im sure someone on here has that info. Good luck!
