The joy of owning a TA

Really! I was out rock finding with my 300U and 5' bush Hog yesterday. The field is pretty overgrown with weeds and clover and I had the Hog down low. There is one short steep hill where it would start to bog down. It was so nice to just reach for the lever and pull back the TA. Man, if I need to do that on my McCormick or anything else I have to clutch and down shift (PITA). Love the TA! Is there any current tractor out there that has the same? I know the new clutchless gearboxes substitute but it's not the same. I think I may have to make the next tractor a 460 or 560 :)

I'm glad you posted this. What you and the respondents said about the operation of a T/A is very educational. Thanks. mike

Dad bought a 350 new, with 3-16mounted plow. Actually we plowed most of the time in low side of TA. Usually 4th TA, sometimes 3rd TA. Ran for many years before he had to rebuild the TA.

The TA can be a handy tool, and will last a long time if used properly. Dad always liked his until he had to pay to replace it (he started shifting it slower as he got older).

Shift it fast and firm and it will last.

I know what you mean. I grew up running mostly letter-series tractors on my grandfathers dairy farm. He had larger and newer tractors but I was more comfortable with the smaller ones. As an adult, I started my hobby farm with an M and then an MD. Last year, I picked up a 400D with a working TA. I couldn't believe the difference when I first plowed with it! I don't think I ever appreciated it on the newer ones with variable-speed transmissions because they seldom lack the necessary horsepower. My 400D with 3-16's sometimes can't handle the dense clay earth that I throw at it. It was such a thrill to just pull the TA and listen to that engine recover. Terrific idea!
