Thanks for the replies, another question - Is this Cub supposed to have a spring loaded shifter lever? someone took the knob off the lever, welded an extension on it to make it taller, BUT it also has a spring at the base of the shift lever so as to (I"m guessing here) keep the shifter lever end (beneath the cover) up out of the shifter forks. Is this the way it should be?!!

The spring is correct.

The extension, obviously, is not. Somebody did the exact same thing to mine. It's supposed to have the short bent shifter, but it's got a long "Rat Fink" style shifer lever that bangs me in the left shin while I'm mowing. A most annoying feature that will be remedied with a hack saw come this winter.
