I know this is a little off topic - but it is a International Harvestor question. I just purchased an older ONAN generator that has a International Harvestor V8 Engine late 70"s to earlie 80"s . I have been told that this engine is obsolete and that parts are hard to find. I have a couple of questions: Are parts for International V8"s available & if so where. What other major engine manufacturer would be a replacement - IE Bolt patterns on the engine mounting points? I was told that the only major part I need to worry about is the water pump - is there a place that can rebuild them?

Thanks
Dave

After searching around on the Engine - I uncovered the IHC name place - and it ia V549.

I do need valve pan gaskets and I would like to pick up a spare water pump.

I rebuilt a 304 from an 1100 pickup that belonged to my grandfather. Man was that expensive!!! I quickly found out that different parts were used on the engine depending on when it was produced. The lesson I learned was to always take the old part to NAPA to compare and if it doesn't ask them to see if another brand matches.

If the engine is a 304, 345, or 392, the engine ID is on a flat just below the head on the front right of the engine block. If it has the exhaust manifold on it yet, you may have to use a small mirror to see up under the manifold to get the numbers.

Depends on the engine. The LV-series engines, the behemoths that run from the V-401 [not to be confused with the AMC 401, which IH used in light trucks for a couple of years in the '70's and called the "V-400"] to the V-605 and includes the V-549, haven't been produced since about '78 or '79, so parts MAY be getting scarce.

The SV-series engines, which are the V-266, V-304, V-345, and V-392, are pretty common and MOST parts are available thur NAPA and other such sources. They were last used in trucks in about '83...the exception being the V-266, which was last used in the mid-'60's, so some V-266-ONLY parts may be getting scarce by now.

Then there were the MV-series engines...I remember the MV-404 but can't remember the other one...but both were used primarily in Loadstar trucks in the mid to late 1970's.

The SV parts are still out there because the SV engines have a loyal following among Scout enthusiasts, and since SV's were around from about 1957 thru '83, they'll probably be available for many years to come.

I had an old experienced mechanic work on our 1600 grain truck. Rebuilt the carb. He said IH was always switching components and that the most important thing you could have was the "line sheet". He described it and I went to the glove box and pulled it out of the owners manual. He was sure tickled. He said those things were so valuable to a mechanic he suggested I make a copy and keep it in a safe place so the mice didn't get it or it otherwise get lost. It gives a run down of all the components that went into that particular truck. I know kinda off the subject but ties in with some earlier posts.
