For those of you who haven't been following my little Soap Opera, here is a summary...

Allan NE found a '46 H not too far from where I live, and real close to where family lives. It has weird modified rear wheels, and wide front end steering, so I ask a bunch of questions and decide I really want it. So I bid on it. But got outbid. :(
The guy from MI who won the bid flakes out. So the owner contacts me. I went to see it today and meet him. He started it up. Showed me that just the hubs of the wheels had been modified, so easily replaceable. I look it over. It's beat up and dirty... but did I mention IT RUNS! Sounds pretty darn good for not having a muffler!

We settled on $650 for it. AND IT RUNS!!!

My brother-in-law will pick it up next weekend and move it to his farm. I'll move it down to my new house once we get settled in and I have my work area built and ready for it.

So now I get to start buying books, and that parts H I had my eye on for $300... and tools. (Need just about every tool, cause I have nothing)

Gentleman... START YOUR CREDIT CARDS!!!

Can you tell I'm happy? :D

I have pictures, but have to wait till I get home to upload them.

Sorry if I sound like a wet blanket,BUT, a co-worker told of someone who bought a car that needed an exhaust system. Without the muffler they did not hear the knock in the engine. Try to get a muffler on it before you pick it up, or start it and hold a screw driver or shortened broom hand against the motor and try to feel for bad sounds. Good luck and I hope it always brings a good feeling to you when you hear it come alive.

Hey Mike,

been following along with your crisis. But i hope you fare better with your running tractor than i did.

Bought a running 1984 super A for $500
. started easily, clean oil, clean antifreeze, gears worked , hydraulics worked, steering loose, clutch not too good. Them the problems started to show up the farther i went. seals gone in both final drives, tranny, bearings bad in various places. gas tank developed a leak. tires dry rotted.....

since i was just going to use the tractor and not bring it back to show quality i didn't get into the engine. worst mistake. after getting it all prettied up and painted , i went to change the oil and presto antifreeze in the very bottom of the pan. never did mix with the oil just sat on top of the drain plug.

so guess what i am doing now.Yep overhauling the engine. going to be a new tractor when i get threw. with a couple grand or more in it.

But i'm happy for ya and it wont be long you will have another one. I'm up to 3 now in 2 years.
actually 5 farmalls, but 2 are just junkers for spare parts.

Congratulation on H in reply to Mike CA, 08-05-2006 22:28:12
Good going Mike, now I can quit looking for ads of Farmall H's and M's in Calif. I get a break!!!:>)

Now comes the fun part, tearing it apart fixing everything then putting it back together.

As for tools, check Pawn shops, second hand stores, yard sells and finually auctions. Not sure how your branch of service is but, when I was in the Army, you could check out tools from hobby shop to work on your vehicle.

Here is a website for Parts manual on H's

Paul G. I haven't found one yet. If and when I do I'll post the website on here. I need one like this for SC, but a lot of the manuals for SA has a lot of info Shawn and I need for his SC tractor.

Man if you need tools you better start hitting auctions. I'll bet I have more then $10,000 in tools and still need a few. Of course you could always go to sears and buy one of there big sets. At around $5000 but then you will still need the odd ball stuff. Happy to hear you now have the H now you get the fun of busted knockles and boody hand form when that wrench slips or the nut/bolt pops loose and you hit your hand on the part that doesn't jump out of the way. I can't remember when the last time was that I didn't have at least one cut on my hand and right now I have 6 or 7 but its all part of playing on thses old tractors. HAVE FUN

Well I have 2 welders, that un its self was about $2500-3000. Then a torch set that is about $1000 by the time you get the tanks. The things like pipe benders, shop press chop saw and a few other things and that gets it up to around $5000. And thens theres the hand tools. I have wrenches from les then 1/4 inch up to 3 inches and in most of those I have 3 or 4 of each. It doesn't take long to add up and I have had a couple sets taken by way of 5 finger discount which hurt real bad. Twice now I have had to start from zero and get tools becuase some one wahted them and just took them. Of course I'm not saying you will need all the tools I have but you can figure on a few hundred to get you going and then maybe more depending on how big you go etc

I can't express the elation I have in finding you with "H" . Collective sigh of relief. If the brakes are good, all is well if the brakes are marginal, or theoretical, fixthem before anything else. A tractor that won't run is pretty safe. One that won't stop is deadly. JimN

I think the bug hits you this way: Buy a tractor and restore it, then an hour after you buy the 2nd one and before it gets home, you start thinking about what model you want for the 3rd one. Any way thats how it went for me.

Mike, congrats, I know you will get a kick out of it. Reference tools (the neighbors around here call me the tool man) Farm auctions are a good place to get big 1/2 and 3/4 drive sockets and wrenches. Auto mechanic types don't usually want them. Keep your eye out for a tractor jack at those sales too. Avoid cheap import tools. (the kind you see in the big bin) when you go to the auto supply. Buying good quality tools will pay dividens. Keep your noggin safe. G

I'm a little embarrassed about jumping the gun the last time, but you know I'm happy for you. One piece of advice on tools. Get yourself a set of standard Craftsman ratcheting box wrenches. I found I could take care of 50% of the tractor just with those and maybe save a little $$$. Then you can pick up a 3/4 & 1/2 drive socket set, 2 ton floor jack, compressor, hvlp paint gun, sandblasting cabinet, power tools, and all of the gaskets, bearings, seals, etc. to take care of the other 50%:)
No worries though. The second one will be much cheaper!

While the original ploice are not happy with me, I like those oversize rear wheels/tires on that tractor. You won't see too many like that around, and being they're 26" wheels, your gearing should be just fine. No dought it doesn't look like the pretty little H that rolled off the assembly line, but there are are thousands of others around that do. That thing looks like it's ready to go to work. Such modifications are my favorite thing to look at when I go to tractor shows.

Mike,

Congratulations! You will love the H. I love mine - which you saw in the post below. I am not responsible for the restoration, ( really it's a repaint). I have done some mechanical work on it and spent some time getting it to run smoothly but all worth it. I have two Super C's to restore and a Super A to restore for my wife.
