Hello,

The F-20 I was working on for several years to bring back to life is running great, BUT...

The throttle is super sensitive and the governor does not seem to be working. It runs at an OK speed if the throttle is (beyond) all the way in. But pul it out even a little bit and it goes crazy fast, even on the first notch.

Also, going up hills, the throttle does not adjust to keep the engine speed at a normal speed, and downhill, it likewise does not slow the engine down.

Any ideas?

Is this the 20 narrow on page 5? If so it does have the variable speed governor and yes, it should be more responsive than that. Could be lots of things, sticky linkage, including where it goes through the trottle tube to sticking weights or bad bearings in the govenor itself. I don't think the weights have springs on them, only the main spring on the arm.

Yes, it is the Narrow. I have had the mechanism that goes between the governor and the carb off, and I do have the "fingers" in the right place. When I adjust the throttle control, the butterfly in the carb rotates between fully closed and fully open (which sems right). It must not take being open very far to make her speed up.

How would I check the machanisms inside the governor itself? This is the tractor that hoad not run in over 50 years until a month ago, so it is possible something could be gummed up in there.

Could you let me know what you mean by "main spring on the arm" so I can look for that?

Thanks as always!

If you take the top off the governor case, (4 bolts just below the oil filler cap) you can see the arm and the spring. You will need to take the front off to see into the weights and thrust arm, (kinda hard to see with the radiator in the way) Other thing to look for is lost motion anywhere in the linkage.

Be sure the throttle rod link is between the fingers on the carburetor, It is real easy to get it on one side or the other. It will act simmilarly if it is not attached propperly, Good luck!
