Why does my H make this terrible grinding noise when I use the left brake? It seems to grab a bunch when just pushed lightly. How do you adjust band brakes? Also what is this lever for on the right side that twists and seems to connect where a mag would be if it had one. On the handle the decal says open.

There may be problems with the drum and the bearing and seal on that brake. Oil and dirt could be part of the mix. Remove the bolts on the brake pan, unhook the brake clevis and wiggle the pan off. At a glance you will know if there is oil, dirt, metal filings, worn linings etc. The drum will unbolt and pull off to show condition of seal.Don't forget to remove the adjusting screw at the bottom of the pan. Often if the lining is not worn out, a good cleaning and adjustment, will get you going, there are brass bushings in the ends of the brake shafts that fit into the mounting holes in the tractor, they corrode and sieze, clean, grease or replace as needed..e-mail if you need help...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Before it rusted and fell off, there were shutters or louvers that opened and closed on the rear side of the radiator, you turned this crank handle to adjust them. As far as the brakes are concerned, It is my guess that you are grinding rivits and need to replace the lining. Pull the drum off and look at it. When you look, the manner of adjustment will be clear.
