My M is running rough. I checked the compression and I have around 100 psi on each cylinder. When you pull the throttle it stumbles an dtehn clears up. The valve gap is at .017. All of the autolite plugs I pulled were carboned. The carb is set okay at about 1.5 turns on both the air and the gasoline adustment screws. Any ideas would be appreciated. I also installed new points and wires. Could a weak coil cause such a problem?

Run the engine WOT (wide open throttle) and re-adjust the high speed mixture screw for smoothest running then add 1/2 turn out for a little extra power.
Repeat for the idle mixture at idle speed (turn in 1/16 or so for better acceleration) and then repeat the process with both screws.
1 1/2 turns doesn"t mean diddly except to have a starting point; readjust as needed from there.
Differing float levels, cleanliness, etc. will call for different adjustments on the mixture screws.

Jed, Sure a weak coil can cause all sorts of ignition problems, but thats not my first suspect for now at least. If you run Autolite plugs try the NON RESISTOR 3116 or if Champion try a hotter plug also. Use wire core plug wires NOT carbon core resistor suppression wires. Dont run the carb any richer then necessary i.e. lean it for light duty use and richen it up only enough to do the job under heavy loads. If shes black smoking any excess out the stack run the carb leaner and insure the air filter n inlet piping is all clean n free. Other then that the points n condensor n wires as you mentioned and HOTTER plugs may help PLUSSSSS SS use radiator air restrictions or shutters or thermostat etc TO GET N KEEP THE ENGINE TEMPERATURE UP can help also. Its not all that expensive to try a new coil if the spark is a faint yellow as compared to the desired visible BLUE and all else is okay.

Is the carbon a wet oily carbon or a dry black carbon??? If its a dry black carbon then your probably running rich and gas fouling the plugs. If its sort of oily you may have valve guides leaking some oil in to the cylinders.

Get hot coil or eletronic ign.& hot plugs such as champion D21 . If you want it to really run good use airplane 100 low lead gas.hope this helps. Will
