My B is leaking gear oil out the left side down onto the wheel. An old man passed through the shop and commented that I should replace the 6 gaskets in the rear end and final drives and that would fix the problem. When I made a trip to the local Case NH dealership the parts guys didn't have a clue. There is a mechanic that works there that was arround when the B was new equipment but he only works 2 days a week and during times I can't get away. So my question is does anybody know what these gaskets or oil seals actually are? Thanks.
Kyle

Never had a rear axle out, but those "gaskets" might be shims to take up end-play.

There aint no 6 gaskets but there is a seal on the tranny out-put and another one at the final drive replace them and you wont have any leaks.

Your tractor is 40 years older than many of the employees. Every tractor I purchase, I get operator's, parts and service manuals. I give the parts guy the part number and he gets the part for me, usually by the next day. Parts manuals also greatly help assembly and disassembly.

When it comes to replacing gaskets, never underestimate the value of RTV sealant. My two cents worth.

Mornin Kyle, Your problem is more than likely the outer seal on the lower axle. You will have to remove the tire and wheel. Block and chock the tractor. Remove the inside cover on the final drive and the bolt and washer on the inside. It can be a bit of a pain to remove, you will probablly have to use the bolt to tap the axle out after you remove the 4 bolts securing the outer bearing cover. Remember the large bull gear is on that axle so dont damage the teeth by dropoing it on the concrete. After removal of the axle you will need a hydraulic press to remove the outer bearing and then you can relace the outer seal. You will also need all the gaskets when you order a new seal.

I just finished replacing all 7 seals on my Farmall B. There is the outer seal on the lower axle, a seal on the side of the transmission housing, a seal on the front of the transmission, and a seal on the upper axle where the tube bolts on. Here are the part #s. You will need two 288864R3, two 71597C91, two 71697C1, and one 381907R91. These are Case/IH part numbers. They cost me $135.93 for all 7. You might be able to cross these numbers with someone else to get the price down. Good luck,
Charles
