Int 664 with a 239 Diesel and Bosch injection pump has me stumped - of course it doesn't take much to stump me! Some days you turn it over and pull the advance and zoom, it's running like right now. Other days it cranks til it sounds like it is sucking air & won't fire. Yesterday it started quick & square baled 3 or 4 hours; Today-a nice warm day-it didn't want to start. Maybe it had enough of those big ole windrows!

Can you feel the lower lever on the side of the pump contact the stop plunger when the cable is in the start position? When it acts up and you have trouble starting it, is there a normal amount of smoke coming out the exhaust, or is there no smoke or less smoke than normal? Next time you have trouble starting it, try cracking the bleed valve on the fuel filter open, see if you get fuel coming out right away, or if some air comes out first. I suppose it's possible that the fuel from the tank to the filter is draining back while the tractor sits, but I'm not familiar enough with the 664 to say why. I noticed you say "turn it over and pull the advance". Are you cranking the engine before you pull the cable? You should have the cable pulled before you start cranking. It does make a difference. Also helps to have the throttle in exactly the quarter throttle position. Can you post a picture of your 664? They are a very rare tractor and I've never even seen a picture of one. All I know is that they are very similar to a 544 Utility.

Thanks KB for the info. The 664 is basically a 656 Utility but with the 239 German Diesel. It has 4 of the same cylinders that an 826 has 6 of. I have an 826 and it has the advance feature like the 664. I've been (for years) starting both of these tractors by cranking them over about a second or two and then pulling the advance-about like you'd choke a gas motor. I'll try setting the advance first. Perhaps I've not set the throttle up enough. Thanks again for the good advice. By the way, by your handle KB-826, I figure you have an 826. I've said for years that in the history of man, no one will ever design a more user friendly tractor than the 826.
