Is it ok to use IH brand 85, 90-140 GL-5 in a Farmall H trans and stearing box? I know the weight is correct but on the Deere board they are petrified of using a GL-5.

Far as I'm concerned GL 5 is fine, I think that's what most of them are anyway. Where you need to be careful is where the hydraulics and transmission/differential are in one unit, such as the Ford 8N, perhaps some of the JD's are like that. For IH, the oil to use then is Hytran, but in your H GL 5 should be fine. Only my opinion, but I would use 80W90, 85W90 or straight 90 weight, as I don't think the 140 is necessary.

Thanks!! I used 85, 90-140 because that was what I could get. Is the 140 ok or will it do damage?

I don't think it will do any damage. I have 140 in my Super A, because the pto seal still leaks after I replaced it, 140 didn't slow the leak much. But, I think 140 is to heavy for cold weather. IH did not mention 140, and recommended thinning 90W with kerosene in cold weather. I suppose if they make something like a 80 or 90W-140 it would be ok -- presented without proof, only an opinion.
