1942 Farmall H.

6V. Magneto. Clean fuel filters.

When mowing the field and working it till hot, the ol' girl sputters and loses power. After it cools down she will run fine until working hard in the pasture.

I'm asking this for my 80 year neighbor who still mows the pasture but he's getting tired too.

I'm thinking it's one of these things:

Vacuum leak or crack in manifold?

Tank not venting when hot?

Magneto getting tired.

Any ideas that will help my tired old neighbor down the road.

I suspect that when he gets too tired I'll be running his H and mowing the field so it will be good for me to get to know this old girl before that happens. Tom

Only a guess, but you might want to adjust the valve clearance. The other possibility is a cracked manifold, or faulty manifold gaskets. Could also be the carb to intake gasket. I really doubt if it is a fuel delivery or ignition problem.

Apparently it will run for 45 minutes or so and then the sputtering will start and the power loss.

He said that it is not red-lining, but just doing the usual working and hogging a field.

What did you use to insulate the fuel line?

I'll ask him to vent the cap, and I will install the insulation on the line.

To me, it sounds more like a coil issue, but will try the other easy fixes first...

How long does it take before it starts haveing problems?? If it like an hour or so then I would guess the coil in the mag is going bad.

I would turn out the carb's load screw, usually on the front bottom, 1/2 turn at a time to see if it clears up. Count your turns to retrace your actions.

If it gets to the boiling point it needs service to the cooling sys befor it gets dammaged.

What do you mean when you say "hot"? If the temp gauge gets into the high side of the normal range, that"s pretty warm for a Farmall. Could it just be overheating a bit, causing the trouble? You can check the gas cap theory- just loosen it and the trouble should clear up immediately. Or could be that the mag needs a tune up.

Could be vapor lock. I have trouble with a couple of old tractors, that ran fine a few years ago. I either rerouted the gas line or insulated it. This modern gas vaporizes a lot easier than the old gas did. I have one that runs fine for about 30 or 40 minutes then will quit unless you throttle down. It will idle all day, but if the throttle opens or the governor opens it's over. I insulated the gas line and that cured it.
