I just bought a 1949 os-6 tractor & it won`t go into forth or fifth gear. All other gears work fine.Could it be the shifter itself?Don`t know where to start looking first.Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Assuming that you can move the lever into the 4/5 neutral part of the pattern but it won't move forward into 4, or back into 5, the shift rail in the trans may be rusted tight, or bent, Remove top to fix.
Assuming it goes into the gear locations (where there is supposed to be 4 or 5 but remains in neutral, it is pull the top time. Rail, or shift fork.
Assuming it won't go into the 4/5 area of the pattern at all. I would pull the shifter lever out of the trans cover, and look to see if the 4/5 shift rail is at all centered in the neutral position. If it is not, move it with a big screwdriver so that it is aligned. If this does not fix it may be necessary to pull the top.
good luck,
JimN

Hello Jim! The tractor is on rubber & it has a hand clutch which is on the right side when seated on the teactor. This is a narrow tractor which was mostly used in vinyards.Very much like the 0-6 but without the sheet metal that covered the wheels, engine & etc. There were only 731 of these tractors made.I assume they were all five speeds.(Don`t know). Thanks for responding. Don.

There is a bolt (I think it is toward the clutch pedal from the shifter) it looks just like a cover bolt, but its purpose is to lock out high gear (5) if the tractor is on steel wheels. If it is removed, and looked at it should be extended on the end to prevent the movement of the shifter into 5th (only)
If it was installed when the shifter was out of place, it could lock the rail from full neutral. Just an unlikely thought. Good luck.
